I think analytic philosophy has changed a lot (for the better!) in recent decades, to a great extent thanks to the influence of feminist thinkers. After WWII there was a whole tendency towards being (allegedly) apolitical, which needed to be overturned. We’re moving in good directions ☺️

The Left Vienna Circle (in 'Red Vienna') was indeed quite to the left, but to my mind Carnap and Neurath were then espousing technocratic (in the problematic sense) versions of socialism. Later Neurath became quite disillusioned and Carnap toned it down when in the US bc of MCcarthyism.

Thi draws from a wide range of literatures (I don't recall if it includes McLuhan, but that could well be). A glaring omission in the book IMO is Foucault! But it may be a strategic choice to leave him out 😆

I didn't mean to be supporting the original claim :D Sorry if I gave this impression. I think the claim is much too general ('analytic philosophy' is not a well-defined category anyway). My point was just to say that the idea of value-ladenness of artifacts, methods and technologies is interesting.

Btw it occurs to me that you may find it (too) strong because you may be reading 'political' as in, supporting a party or political ideology. I think he means political in a different sense, in the sense of the power arrangements in a society; politics as “who gets what, when, and how” (Lasswell).

I understand the worry, which can be viewed as an instance of the 'genetic fallacy'. That's not Winner. To quote Thi Nguyen discussing Winner: "“Each technology pushes society in a particular political direction, and these effects are often independent of the intentions of its inventors and users.”

My own take is that *some* philosophical methods tends towards affirming the status quo (in the direction of common sense philosophy, ordinary language philosophy), and others do the very opposite (e.g. Socratic elenchus).

A Foucauldian perspective shows that the focus on credibility deficit (or excess) in the epistemic injustice literature is insufficient to suitably conceptualize the relevant phenomena. -> High quality academic publishing is still costly, even if academics do lots of the work for 'free'. Production costs are not negligible, and long-term archiving is really important (and costly).

What makes the charity model sustainable is the association of high quality with (reputed) university presses such as OUP, CUP etc. They still need to think of commercial aspects to stay in business, but need not aim for profit. ->

Just to clarify: as I reviewer for OUP I had the choice between monetary compensation or double of the monetary value in books. I chose books this time. While you're of course right that academic publishing has many issues, charity publishers such as OUP are not the same as Springer or Wiley etc.

Todays's PhD ceremonies
“Empowerment” has become one of the most widely used words in contemporary feminism. It appears in social media, advertising, corporate culture, and political debate. Yet as the term has become more popular, its meaning has shifted. Where empowerment once referred to collective struggles to challenge and change oppressive social structures, it is now often used to describe individual confidence, choice, or self-expression—even when those choices take place within unequal conditions.
