If you duckduck Pangram reliability, a lot of material pops up, e.g.
yomu.ai
Pangram AI Detector Review: How Accurate Is It on Student Essays?
Useful as a screening tool: strong on clear AI or human essays, but unreliable for lightly edited or paraphrased student drafts.

I am not sure Pangram is a good guide. You could simply write back and ask whether an LLM was involved. But ... unless you really want to do the interview I would just decline and move on.

The number of aircraft damaged on the ground is remarkable. Would be good to hear from people who understand this stuff: is this out of line for other conflicts? Attacking planes on the ground is hardly new. And given Russian experience, how easy is airfield defense against drones?

That is kind of addressed in your (2) but I don't think aiding assessments of novelty is the main aim. It's about providing a good picture of the lit and your place in it.

I've always understood (and referees have enforced this) a requirement to cite all prior work on your research question, whether a source or not. Indeed there is a particular obligation to cite work you think is wrong and explain why.

Trying to pick books for my spring grad seminar on Sex, Gender, and Colonialism. I’m having a hard time balancing “classics” with newer works. Here is the pile that I have made so far. Suggestions welcome!

What I don't get is that given that this argument was already floating around, the mouse-tail experiment late 1800s was viewed as important.

I had students who went weeks without touching paper, so I think part of it is lack of practice. Average handwriting definitely got funkier over time.

Impressed by all the comments rejecting joining the next gov't! Do they imagine the Green Party, having now arrived at the correct line, will win enough seats to form a gov't on its own? Or is their view that it must remain a minority protest party?

In universities across the country this week, Lionel Robbins' definition will be rolled out for the start of introductory economics courses. Joan Robinson's observation about its timing will probably receive less attention. www.jstor.org/stable/18215...
In 1932, Professor (now Lord) Robbins
published the famous essay in which he
describes economics as the subject that
deals with the allocation of scarce means
between alternative uses. No doubt this
was the expression of a long tradition but
the date of publication was unlucky. By
the time the book came out there were
three million workers unemployed in
Great Britain and the statistical measure
of GNP in U.S.A. had recently fallen to
half its former level. It was just a coincidence that the book appeared when means for any end at all had rarely been
less scarce.

Great banner on a lycéen demo in France (PARCOURSUP is the hated system for applying for and allocating uni places)
The French text on the banner reads PARCOURSUP : NON A LA LUTTE DES PLACES OUI A LA LUTTE DES CLASSES (no to the struggle for places, yes to the class struggle - and in French as in English, 'classes' has two meanings,

I'm off to bed now, but I have in-laws who did H1-B work (and were treated shabbily by employers). I've done academic hiring. The claim of an advantage *over* US citizens is ludicrous. "Juror" is just unhappy about competing against more talented and harder-working people.

If it's the bit about experience, is it not obvious that US firms will recruit the most experienced people they can find in the world? Your claim U.S. citizens cannot find ways to get experience is ludicrous. You ignore the ways visa statuses make life significantly harder than for citizens.

In what way is a person on a student or work visa "privileged over US citizens"?

Labs in science class. Pissed me off spending two hours setting up, measuring, and messing with data just to validate what was *already printed in the textbook*. Of course it was the most valuable thing I ever did in school. Numbers, units, measurement, errors. Theory and evidence.

It's added a new wing, no? The main building I kind of like: the exterior texture, the massing, the setbacks. And it works well inside as a museum. The wing does look like a bit generic.

He wasn't in Montreal, and he was in a different internment camp in China, but he might have been part of the same late-1943 prisoner exchange. Shanghai to Goa to Cape Town to Rio to NY!

Max's new favorite place.
Two small harnessed dogs sitting in the dirt. We're outside "Hackney Bridge," a food stall complex. I suspect what draws them is the smell of food.Walking beside the towpath are two small harnessed dogs. This is the canalized branch of the Lea that passes Hackney Wick, lined with decrepit houseboats.

I want to make the most conservative argument of all: read for the quality of the lit, and read for the moments when the poem or the play or the chronicle opens to you the minds of people who are 2200 years dead.
010
Colin Danby @cdanby.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
It's circular reasoning: Why should I read this? Because lots of other people read it. It's not a bad thing to know works others know! But it's a thin, instrumental, popularity-contest approach to lit. Canons are self-reproducing. What's outside the "majority"?

Colin Danby @cdanby.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
You certainly see some of this if you teach: students who interpret a grade not as an indication of how much they worked, but as an index of innate talent. There was also some gender division: men more likely to wing it if they believed they were talented.

I genuinely don't know what "ethno" does here! I'm working on 19th century ideas of nation and race right now in anglophone econ, and what I keep seeing is race getting derived logically from nation plus population. All nationalisms seem to produce an ethno- if they are asked to.

There have been a variety of Zionisms with different views on what a state should be like. Far as I can tell the central tragedy is that the Irgun's Zionism ended up defeating the others.
100
Colin Danby @cdanby.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I get why someone might come to that view. All I wanted to flag was my own belated realization of what was dog and what was tail. In the document, "Zionism" plays a central logical role as *the* principle of Israel. That's why the writers cannot pluralize it.

I don't know what it is. It was the only place I could find a complete text of the Green resolution, on a quick search. Do I have the right text?
000
Colin Danby @cdanby.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
And fwiw the equation of Zionism and racism is only there because it's step in the resolution's larger argument for one-state not two-state: that Israel was illegitimate from its founding. I've been drawn into discussing it as a standalone proposition, but that's not what's going on here.

The load-bearing assumption here is "full expression of." Both that Zionism can be boiled to a single principle, and that there's a direct causal tie between principle and violent practice.
