They are going on a test to become a Librarian, the name for people who wield Plots to create stories for the different lands. There is also a secondary protagonist by the name of Night Eiros who the player encounters at various parts of their journey. Night is a mysterious figure that appears in various towns, speaking individually to the Librarians in charge of all the different areas. His motivation is largely unknown to the player, but he is attempting to get the approval of the Librarians in support of reopening a banned area of the world, which is referred to only as [REDACTED] due to everything including its name being stricken from every record.
