Another chapter of #AI extracting and abusing the commons. Today is #zenodo 's turn, but before it has been #OpenStreetMap, #Wikipedia... This clearly shows that they are not looking for knowledge (knowledge was already there in the open) but about appropriating and fencing it.
A screenshot from Zenodo stating: "Zenodo is currently experiencing slowness and intermittent outages due to heavy automated traffic from bots and AI crawlers. We are aware of the problem, and our team is focused on stabilizing the service. Thank you for your patience."

Right now, I was supposed to be talking about Gender in Digital Goods at the Digital Good Network at the University Of Sheffield, but instead, I am following @ucu 's call for an academic boycott. This has nothing to do with the organisers, and I'm sorry for […] [Original post on scholar.social]
A text stating: I would like to apologise for my last-minute absence in this talk and the issues this might pose to other speakers and the Digital Good Network team. I would have loved to join you today to share some insights from our research and to speak and learn about gender, inclusion, feminism and care, and why these topics matter, particularly in Digital Goods.

Last week, the University of Sheffield announced the latest in more that 45 restructures since the Vice-Chancelor descended. These measures include redundancies, cuts as well as double deductions for those taking part in strike actions. As a firm proponent of these values, I could not, in good conscience, stop but following UCU’s call for an academic boycott to any event organised by the University of Sheffield.

At this point I want to be clear about three things. First, this is a personal standpoint and not a moral judgement to those who have decided to act differently. Second, this has nothing to do with the Digital Good Network and their team, who have proved all these years how important these -and other- values are to them. I’m sorry to be creating a disruption to those who I care and I appreciate, but I hope this type of collective action will be beneficial in the long run.

Now that everyone is (rightly) concerned about the heatwave, it's a good time to remind about the environmental costs of training and using #AI and how these items are not at all independent. If we normalise AI, I'm afraid we will be normalising as well more […] [Original post on scholar.social]
A kids activity of connecting the dots that will display a sun. Overlayed there's the text "AI" in the starting point and "Climate change" at the end.

5. Terrain transformation We argue that not only the host is transformed as a consequence of the migration, but also the destination and the wider landscape. Neither #Twitter /X nor #Mastodon, not even the social media landscape, are no longer the same.

4. Migration Probably the most obvious and difficult to define and measure: as a result of the previous ones, there is a movement of users from one site or platform to another. This can take many forms: technical actions, such as account setup or closure, content archiving...

3. Collective platform consciousness Users become part of a collective that is distinct to their experience of ordinary site/platform use. They see themselves as connected to and affected by a larger event + as part of a shared responses.

1. The X factor An event or factor that triggers the migration. The “most significant” thing.

Happy to share my last #academic paper, published on New Media & Society and authored with Nate Tkacz and Fangzhou Zhang about our #research on #twittermigration #Xodus Eventful migration: Rethinking social media migration with help from Elon Musk’s sink […] [Original post on scholar.social]
A screenshot of the paper on New Media & Society, showing the title and abstract. The abstract states:

Using the 2022 Twitter to Mastodon migration as a case study, this article contributes a new understanding of social media migration (SMM). It begins with a review of existing studies of SMM, showing how migration is often understood as a combination of ‘push and pull factors’. We suggest a need to widen the conceptual scope for how we approach SMM in ways that more directly tie such movements to specific questions of power, agency and events that ripple through digital cultures. Drawing on social media account analysis, a survey of recently migrated Mastodon users, content from high-profile Twitter users and other media commentaries, we re-present the migration in order to detail our ‘eventful’ theory of migration. Eventful social media migration is comprised of five elements: an initial X factor; the emergence of a critical voice; a collective platform consciousness; an observable migration; and a wider terrain transformation.

Oh, the #Irony of #OpenAI complaining about stealing intellectual property. To that, there is a Spanish proverb which would translate as, ‘They who robs a robber earns a hundred years' remission.’ Seen at : @ft.com www.ft.com/content/a0dfedd1-5255-4f… #AI #DeepSeek

Much of what has been published about #deepseek is to flag how biased it is and how aligned with China's government their responses are about controversial topics. The same could be said about #chatptg #gemini #metaAI except it is easy to spot when the […] [Original post on scholar.social]

...if there's no way to know how were they trained? ...if they reproduce our own biases?"
