One of the biggest problems with trying to run a decent bus service is the impact of congestion - all the other vehicles clogging up the roads. This report might be 10 years old but the points it makes are still true today. www.cpt-uk.org/news/the-imp...

Your city could embrace a patio/street seating culture if it really wanted to. You don’t have to be like Paris to do better, you just have to WANT to do better. Between now and next summer, your city could put in place everything it needs to transform streets as people-places. So do you want to?

Here’s what we really need to focus a lot more discussion on — you don’t need to hate cars in order to want people to have the CHOICE to walk, bike and take public transit in your city. Better cities provide more choices, and work better for EVERYONE. Bad cities offer only dependency. #CarDependency

In light of the recent decision to approve the proposed Cambourne to Cambridge busway, Cambridge Area Bus Users makes the following statement: Cambridge Area Bus Users is generally supportive of initiatives that will lead to improved services for passengers. This is especially important in the Cambridge area in the absence of any serious attempt to address congestion that impacts on the efficiency of bus services, and a more effective use of the road network.

Buses after Cambridge United weekday home matches
For 10 weeks during last winter, Stagecoach ran buses following Cambridge United's weekday home matches to get spectators back to Newmarket Road Park & Ride. Happily, Stagecoach have confirmed to us that these journeys will continue for the 2026-27 season. Buses leave from outside the Cledara Abbey Stadium at 2130 and 2200 and operate as service PR2F. There are also services in the opposite direction at 2120 and 2150.

We wondered what this Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority review was intended to achieve.
cambridgebususers.org
Combined Authority Bus Network Review
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority recently undertook a public consultation on what they described as a "Bus Network Review" (PDF). Note this "consultation" is now closed. Why? Cambridge Area Bus Users could not really see the point of spending time and money on these short-term changes, which simply replace one set of partly-unsatisfactory routes and times with a set that’s marginally improved, but which remains straitjacketed by the need to avoid conflicting with “commercial” services.

Mayor and Combined Authority Board must act now to save our buses
A post jointly authored with Cambridgeshire Sustainable Travel Alliance Bus services across our region could be cut by 38% by 2035, due to rising costs and insufficient public funding. A key reason for the shortfall is Mayor Paul Bristow’s pledge to freeze the Mayoral Council Tax Precept which supports buses. Mayor Paul Bristow and the Combined Authority’s Board can turn this situation around.

Between 29 June and 30 August, Whippet will be running a revised timetable on its Universal routes, U1 and U2. And the reason for this summer timetable? The operator is taking advantage of reduced traffic congestion during the summer months to speed up journey times. Yes, if you can reduce congestion on the roads, then buses will run faster and more people will get more quickly to their destinations. Enjoy it while it lasts! Whippet changes from 30th March (T1 and X1)
At rather short notice, Whippet have announced timetable changes to two of their services from Monday 30th March - the T1 (Cambridge-Huntingdon) and the X1 (Blue Arrow coach service Cambridge-Huntingdon-Peterborough). The T1 sees various changes to (attempt to) better reflect traffic volumes. And extra time has been added to a handful of services on school days to try to devise a timetable that takes account of the extended boarding time required by large numbers of school and college attendees.
