That's a great summary article on PdM. I especially like the systematic detail in the needs analysis. It could help with marketing existing products (thinking backwards, I know): I have this product, what might people need it for, and how does it need to be differentiated for them?

There's always telling it like it is. I can't forget the ballroom dance instructor who was advising uncertain college girls on how to move forward with confidence into the gap between their partner's legs. "Ladies, your leg goes right there."

A Sharon Begley byline, almost 5 years after her death. Upon hearing the news James Watson had died, a STAT reporter said in our Slack, "I wish I could read what Sharon would have written." Incredible news: Sharon in fact did pre-write a Watson obit. And it is masterful and excoriating. 🧪🧬🧫

Graduate seminar did a deep dive on Thomas Paine’s Common Sense yesterday. At the line, “in America the law is king,” they (14 students from 6 countries) burst out laughing. I've been doing this for 35 years and this is the first time that was a laugh line.

@jay.bsky.team I'm seeing a need for (i) an identity-sharing protocol to enable group migration, especially when the migrating group needs to establish new identities on the new platform and (ii) a place to migrate to where group chat is well supported. For (ii), is that here? Is (i) unsolved?

I spoke with a homeless person in Philadelphia who said that the way he became homeless was that he was making ends meet as a food delivery driver ... when his car broke down, he was out of options. He was looking forward to getting housing after a year on the street. And he was very civil.

Not true. We have a growing number of brand meds. The only reason we don’t have all brand meds is because the big PBMs threaten to reduce sales of the brand’s meds if they work with us. They know we will do to brand pricing what we did to generics.

Here's a paper from that era laying out (likely-crippling) problems with SDI. The academics who opposed it were viewed as rogues. A publicity campaign that ignored the issues went to publications with no relevant expertise like the J of the Am Medical Association! link.springer.com/chapter/10.1...

Thanks for explaining how to get past celebrating ignorance: cultivate humility, develop curiosity, and bring back the experts. Like FDR getting past the Dust Bowl era by admitting ignorance, looking for the cause, finding the cause, reducing the cause, and guiding the landscape through recovery.

Has it been 40 years? I participated in a brainstorming exercise to choose functions for a simplified remote at RCA Labs in 1985. The challenge was to control component audio plus a TV. I think we decided to include on/off, digits, play/pause/stop, directional arrows, and volume and channel up/down.

Numerically, the "rank 5" movement makes sense. If NYC voters rank only 2, then there will be fewer viable candidates in later rounds. In that case, the candidate with the most votes could easily be a candidate that the disqualified voters (whose candidates are no longer in the race) would not want.
