On NSF’s postdoc page, the biology and earth science fields have been completely eliminated; the only remaining fellowships are in math, astronomy, engineering, and “entrepreneurship.” Weird choice not to support research on the life support system for 8 billion people. www.nsf.gov/funding/post...

I was also a Fellow. This program brought me from my home country of Australia, providing me resources+networks that paved my career path to becoming a full professor in a US institution. Having now worked with many undergrad/grad/postdocs, I have witnessed CGC benefits to society at large.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service. “Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.
