Comparing, Breaking Bad followed one character's narrative in a classic Shakespearean drama that progressed from series to series. The Sopranos — brilliant, obviously — had many side plots and characters introduced along the way, to keep the story going. Unlike BB, no beginning, middle and end.

Nothing controversial to hold that immigration, selective and controlled, is a good thing.

Yes, I'm sure there's social media fatigue out there, which will make getting another one off the ground quite testing. Having said that, this one's mission is to get back to what Twitter was at the outset. I'm finding Threads travelling towards X rapidly, and Zuck will enshittify it soon enough.

UK govt expected 50K Poles, but 500,000 came, very quickly. Everyone needs housing, schools, GPs, jobs, transport, etc. Nothing to do with ethnicity, origin, or any other factor. Without adequate facilities, the system falls over.

OK, the first time I was a child (14) of a British parent being dragged (reluctantly) from NL to UK. Met plenty of xenophobia, thanks. Later moved from UK to ES, because I met the criteria. Having qualifiers in place is responsible. A completely open border (like the UK had) is not.

...the ground it can lead to tension, such as that which led to Brexit. Plus GDP ≠ GDP per capita, which doesn't increase, while services are pressured. Immigration, good, but qualified, with limitations, not a free-for-all.

As an immigrant (twice over) myself, I would say that immigration is a good thing, while open borders are something else. Given the rapid expansion of the EU, people will inevitably migrate towards prosperity, but the infrastructure to absorb it is often lacking. Govts love the GDP effect, but on...

The UK had the power of veto, plus it failed to implement measures (which other members did) that would have stemmed EU immigration.

Judging by your bio, I see that you are eminently more qualified than I. But I would (humbly) argue that the original Rome treaty did not set out the steps (Maastricht) that took the EU to where it is today.

JvB @causticcorner.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I don't disagree. The problem is that British politicians of all stripes have, for decades, blamed 'the EU' for whatever they were unable/unwilling to fix. Having painted the EU as a bogeyman for so long, the result of the 2016 referendum shouldn't have been that surprising.

JvB @causticcorner.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Why is that controversial? Of course, the single market was the original premise of the EEC. The problem is its subsequent transformation into a political bloc, for which no one had voted.

Canada's would need to be a different category from the EEA, without free movement and rule-taking. If a new trade and security category comes about, this could be open to the UK too. The greatest difference, however, between Norway and Canada vs the UK is that they are both resource economies.

Canada isn't joining the EU. But who knows, perhaps some new counterparty/associate category could be created, which may be open to the UK too.
