I'm pretty sure that's because it's not. "Not terribly legal" persecutions of people of color are kind of a specialty of the Republican party. This particular burst of voter intimidation has clear political benefit for a Republican party bracing for a drubbing. Stating the obvious here; sorry.

We also can't prove that vaccinations don't cause tornadoes. You need a better standard for an assertion than "you can't rule it out with 100% certainty."

Yeah, I saw the Fox News article first, checked it out and thought "This is deliberate, flagrant weaponization of the immigration system against a political opponent. It is intended to intimidate and silence people of color. It couldn't be plainer if it introduced itself in the street."

But endangering someone ELSE'S kids--especially if they are not white--that's just fine! Heroic, even! OMG I'd ask what is wrong with these people but we all know.

By contrast, the current event is what it actually looks like when there is a lab leak. A lab researcher got sick. The containment efforts focus on the lab researchers contacts, presumably emphatically including co-workers in the lab in question.

You mean an outbreak of a local disease that was near a lab studying that disease, but was only ever linked to a wet market? That started with people at a wet market but NOT working in the lab? Where virus was swabbed from the animal stalls in a wet market? An outbreak like that?

Huh? They've shown it can. They've shown that, under certain circumstances, it DOES. That's what the entire story is about.

Wow I can see you folks are working from a whole knowledge base that I somehow missed. Considering how much money is being handed back and forth by a handful of companies building AI and data centers, adding a sex cult seems to cross the boundary of weird and burst triumphantly out the far side.

So it's not really the fanfic that might end the bloody world; it's the day job of the author of the fanfic?

Damn this is confusing.

Cat Sittingstill @catsittingstill.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Okay I see the confusion point. I did not realize that _This Plane of Weirdest Things_ was the title of a work of fiction, rather than *gestures at what passes for the real world these days.*

I think it occurred to me independently. It is a pretty obvious example of a form of literature that 1) meets strict constraints, 2) everyone would at least recognize (I mean, I *could* have said "sestina," but...) and 3) is reasonably well respected.

The study was on the DoJ website; I can confirm this, because I looked it up twice after two different right-wing terror attacks in the US. The first time was after my church was shot up by someone who had been listening to right wing hate radio. Scrubbing it was purely to support Trump lies.

Huh--I just assumed "oh, this means it would take a couple of years worth of time to read the entire conversation end to end" and went on! I think claiming "Romance is dumb because it meets plot constraints" is like claiming "sonnets are dumb because they meet rhyme and rhythm constraints."

I love my Forester! Best cargo space in its class and plenty of headroom. I keep getting love notes from the dealer about "Wouldn't you like to trade up?" and I keep saying "Nope!" and tossing them in the recycle bin.

I'm not sure what you mean by "touch entry" but the iPhone duo has TouchID; the on button reads your fingerprint. If it's anything like the current phones (so, probably) you enter a passcode to wake it after restart, at which point TouchID starts working.

Huh. Well if LDS Republicans care enough about powerful men being predatory to refuse to vote for them, I can show them a few examples at the very top...

Cat Sittingstill @catsittingstill.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I would ordinarily hesitate myself, BUT I'm concerned they will wreck the next version (for me) by putting in FaceID so this seems like a good time to jump. I will spend the extra to get AppleCare (which I usually don't) because yes, that hinge could be a problem.

Cat Sittingstill @catsittingstill.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
On the other hand I'm still using a 12 mini; I've never been cool and see no reason to start trying now. And if nobody wants the Duo that will make it easier for me to get one, so. To be fair I understand the hesitance to be an early adopter with a tech that has given problems in Android hands.

Cat Sittingstill @catsittingstill.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Huh. When I look here, it seems I am the only person in the world who's excited by an iPhone that 1) has TouchID (I was over FaceID the first time I had to turn the phone on while driving, and now I mask too) 2) folds up small enough to fit in a pocket (I think) and 3) folds out to a bigger screen.

Trusted where? My parents lived through the German occupation of the Netherlands as children, moved to the US in their twenties, and were still prickly about Germany and Germans in the 1980s.

Cat Sittingstill @catsittingstill.bsky.social · 04/09/2026
Well the former is close to how I learned it (PAHSS-tah) but my parents were from the Netherlands so sometimes our vowels were different from the local Oregon vowels? I think a lot of this has to do with local accents, as well as learning things through reading first.

Amazon's own balance sheet presents the most compelling evidence that we are stuck in the Enshittocene, the era in which everything is turning into a pile of shit, because the worst ideas of the worst people now make the most money. 1/
Hieronymus Bosch's 'The Conjuror,' a painting depicting a medieval con artist playing a shell game for an audience of astonished peasant rubes. The image has been altered: the conman now has Jeff Bezos's grinning head, and the mouths of all the peasants have been replaced with inverted Amazon 'Smile' logos, so they are now frowning.

Dang, I knew some results were “sponsored” and I tended to avoid those, but I didn’t realize EVERYTHING ON THE FIRST TWO PAGES is artificially expensive. Ugh. And there’s no way to get out of it, because anybody selling on Amazon is spreading the payola out over every place they sell.

I have been laughed at for how I say words for the same reason. Not often, but it’s kind of off-putting.

I came out Oregon. Very reasonable because I lived there until I was about 22. But the thing is Oregon has two very different accents—west and east--which doesn’t show at all on the map. I thought that was strange.

Going to the Knoxville Botanical Gardens to hear the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra (it’s free this evening! Starts at 7 pm!) And I practiced my violin (for a paltry ten minutes but it’s the time I’ve got) and it occurred to me how much I love this particular instrument. I am so lucky to have her.

Depends on the coach I suppose. Anyway… He can’t traumatize a couch, but while he’s in that one night stand He’s not up in your business With a bible in his hand If that sofa keeps him busy With its deep, alluring notch And those plump and supple cushions, He’s not reaching for your crotch!

Does the book cover the part where Thomas sexually harassed his female underlings, and also accepted bribes once he was on the court?
