Going to Xiu Xiu Eraserhead later. I watched the film again last night and to see all this again after everything that followed especially Twin Peaks: A Limited Event Series, well there's something inexplicably magical about the coherence & abiding notes of Lynch's language & vibes, exceptional 🖤

A Wake for Samuel Beckett with Harold Pinter (1990) 🖤 youtu.be/YBXgSKG84Zg?...
Harold Pinter on Samuel Beckett
The farther he goes the more good it does me. I don’t want philosophies, tracts, dogmas, creeds, ways out, truths, answers, nothing from the bargain basement. He is the most courageous, remorseless writer going and the more he grinds my nose in the shit the more I am grateful to him.
He’s not fucking me about, he’s not leading me up any garden path, he’s not slipping me a wink, he’s not flogging me a remedy or a path or a revelation or a basinful of breadcrumbs, he’s not selling me anything I don’t want to buy — he doesn’t give a bollock whether I buy or not — he hasn’t got his hand over his heart. Well, I’ll buy his goods, hook, line and sinker, because he leaves no stone unturned and no maggot lonely. He brings forth a body of beauty.
His work is beautiful.

Bad Faith. A grim but essential watch. The scale and the vehemence are quite staggering, really does make the notion of 'reaching out' for debate or whatever seem tragically laughable.
Poster for the documentary Bad Faith, 2024.

And I really like the black and white version. Not re-edited, so the same holes and caveats, but there's an Alphaville/DOA noir cool which suits it very well. And these are certainly the times for it 🖤

So worth revisiting TS Eliot's 'The Hollow Men's after this passage brought some lines to mind, oof 🖤
The “hope” (for capital) implicit in LLMs seems to be that if the language deployed is sufficiently frozen, it can have a freezing effect on the people subjected to it — that it will help kill the language in their brain that still is alive, in the sense that the person regards it as a tool for expressing as yet unformulated things — as making possible a kind of craft production with language — rather than a reified product, a commodity that must necessarily be purchased on a market. LLMs perform a kind of taxidermy with words, presenting them in a lifelike fashion that mainly serves to remind you that they are dead. Being compelled to consume LLM-generated content is like being stuffed with that sawdust. The Hollow Men
Mistah Kurtz-he dead
A penny for the Old Guy

                        I

    We are the hollow men
    We are the stuffed men
    Leaning together
    Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
    Our dried voices, when
    We whisper together
    Are quiet and meaningless
    As wind in dry grass
Or rats' feet over broken glass
    In our dry cellar

Shape without form, shade without colour,
    Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

    Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death's other Kingdom
Remember us-if at all-not as lost
    Violent souls, but only
    As the hollow men
    The stuffed men.

                              II

Eyes I dare not meet in dreams
    In death's dream kingdom
    These do not appear:
    There, the eyes are
    Sunlight on a broken column
    There, is a tree swinging
    And voices are
    In the wind's singing
    More distant and more solemn
Than a fading star. Let me be no nearer
    In death's dream kingdom
    Let me also wear
    Such deliberate disguises
    Rat's coat, crowskin, crossed staves
    In a field
    Behaving as the wind behaves
    No nearer-

    Not that final meeting
    In the twilight kingdom

                    III

    This is the dead land
    This is cactus land
    Here the stone images
    Are raised, here they receive
The supplication of a dead man's hand
Under the twinkle of a fading star.

    Is it like this
    In death's other kingdom
    Waking alone
At the hour when we are
    Trembling with tenderness
    Lips that would kiss
    Form prayers to broken stone.

                      IV

    The eyes are not here
    There are no eyes here
In this valley of dying stars
    In this hollow valley
This broken jaw of our lost kingdoms

In this last of meeting places
    We grope together
    And avoid speech
Gathered on this beach of the tumid river

    Sightless, unless
    The eyes reappear
    As the perpetual star
    Multifoliate roseOf death's twilight kingdom
    The hope only
    Of empty men.

                            V

Here we go round the prickly pear
    Prickly pear prickly pear
Here we go round the prickly pear
At five o'clock in the morning.

    Between the idea
    And the reality
    Between the motion
    And the act
    Falls the Shadow
                                    For Thine is the Kingdom

    Between the conception
    And the creation
    Between the emotion
    And the response
    Falls the Shadow
                                    Life is very long

    Between the desire
    And the spasm
    Between the potency
    And the existence
    Between the essence
    And the descent
    Falls the Shadow
                                    For Thine is the Kingdom

    For Thine is
    Life is
    For Thine is the

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.

Seeing a lot of May Day folklore posts, and now I'm overthinking whether it's a Good Day to eat these conjoined bananas 🤔 or is the answer Absolutely Not... don't want to get sucked into the Black Lodge or something 😬
Two bananas but the skin is not separate, they will have to be consumed together!

Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your method 🙏 I found your post after discovering a similar sized (beginning of) nest and was wondering how best to deal with it. Felt a bit bad, such a lovely little structure, but I'm sure she'll start again elsewhere right away 🤞
A little round wasps nest just beginning, just inside the shed door so not so great in terms of being able to use the shed myself!

Keep getting sucked into rabbit holes, chewing over the *no motive* point. LLMs have *no skin in the game*, the importance of correctness will never be a matter of life and death for them, (for me, layperson:) fundamental conundrum of "meatspace", embodied knowledge + that Cartesian confabulation 🤔
"...if the body had been easier to
understand, nobody would have thought that we had a
mind." [26 - footnote in next image] Richard Rorty, Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature

NB I am not an academic, just haunted by our way of thinking about the Mind and the Body and everything that proceeds from that...26 As I trust chapter two has made clear, I do not mean by this that we should not have thought of ourselves as having beliefs and desires, and as seeing, inferring, and so on. But we would not have saddled ourselves with the notions of a "separable active intellect," a Cartesian "immaterial substance," or Lockean ideas. Our concept of mind would have been much closer to Ryle's or Aristotle's than to the Cartesian
concept we presently have. [Page 239]

(not discussing Freud's *very particular* take, the earlier Jentsch essay is much more on point.) The Uncanny Valley is well known in robotics and Moravec's paradox is interesting to me when reflecting on which 'part' of us *just knows* when something's not right. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moravec...

Not (just) pedantry: yes, ugh, I do indulge in a silly little phone game with, ugh, ads and oh boy Amazon... all that money on AI and well, you're really not selling it 👀 God forbid you should pay one human to put out something even ok at the most basic level 😬 Low grade crud, #enshittification #AI
Amazon ad "Bestseller Beste Price" AI illiterate rubbish with a medieval twang."Trusted prices onmillions of products" yup, no space, just pathetic."Low prices every day: There is always one what you need" what you what... what?!"Today's offer The price is super cheap" aargh I am not buying the price (which is low, the item is cheap... just like these idiots!)

The strengthening wind is giving me the heebie-jeebies tonight. Like in 1987, it's been raining for weeks & I fear a lot of trees may come down 😔 I remember a friend and I went for a walk that night and remarked how weirdly warm the wind was. Now it's always weird. Félix Vallotton, The Wind (1910)

Pineapple Lily, or Sideshow Bob as she is affectionately known. Apparently not at all attractive to slugs or snails and unphased by neglect. A fun bulb if you want to grow something kind of weird looking 🖤
Pineapple Lily. Floppy leaves, long stem up to tiny flowers topped by a cartoonish mop of leaves.
