Yes there are a number of reasons why a male author might use a female pen name that have nothing to do with fear they will be dismissed by female readers.

I once worked with a German who learnt English in Ireland so had both accents prominently.

Are you asking seriously? If so, in the English system (i.e. Oxford), it's more standard to go from your Bachelor's with Honours (which can be through an extra year spent doing a thesis/coursework or it can be just based on marks, eg Distinction or High Distinction average) straight to a doctorate.

Cathy @cathyr.bsky.social · 28/07/2026

Did she? I read where she critiqued its tokenism and not doing enough with the diverse cast (relegating them to superficial support characters) but that’s the opposite I would think.

Why is it that the worse an operating system is, the more they nag you to update to it? No, Apple, I do NOT want to update to Tahoe tonight or any other night.

Adding an Oxford comma after vigilante only makes it more ambiguous as you could read it as an aside - i.e. Plath is a vigilante alongside the Shah. I would read that book though!

My favourite is Jinu's Lament, but I wouldn't expect it to win best song. Golden and Let it Go are anthemic and totally deserve their popularity.

THREAD: I got laid off from NYMag/Vulture after 14 years. The family lost 75% of income + medical. Now mzs.press bookstore, once a side project. is do-or-die for Judith & I. I feel weird telling you this because others are doing much worse. But if you could like or share this, we'd be so grateful!

Are you purposely trying to be a troll? I said I doubted whether *future* demand would continue if users had to pay the actual costs. It's basic consumer economics.

020

Cathy @cathyr.bsky.social · 06/02/2026

Again... it's massively subsidised.

Cathy @cathyr.bsky.social · 04/02/2026

It's massively subsidised. I doubt that a significant number of its current users would pay its real costs.

110

Cathy @cathyr.bsky.social · 04/02/2026

Has it though? There's a whole of of forcing AI onto consumers who either don't want it or don't want it in everything. But the main reason why it very well might go back in the bottle is there's a limit to how much consumers will pay for it once it's no longer subsidised.

If you're in central Texas & you have room to house a shelter dog in a spare room Friday - Mon/Tues, area shelters would love your help getting dogs out of outdoor kennels and into homes for a brief break. You don't have to do a lot with them, just let them decompress while we wait out the weather.

There's also a genuinely independent body that draws electorate boundaries and manages the process. So we don't get gerrymandering. And we have preferential voting. Those three things together mean that whoever wins our lower house tends to be elected by a majority of the population.

010

Cathy @cathyr.bsky.social · 08/01/2026

Technically Australia doesn't force people to vote, it requires people to show up to a voting booth. You can choose whether to vote or not. Also not turning up isn't heavily enforced and at most is a minor fine (if even given).

I think the only cure is full on surrender. When KPDH came out, the album was pretty much the only thing I listened to, on loop, for at least 4 weeks until the constant neeeeed to listen to it worked its way out my system.

Watching 100 Days My Prince before it leaves Netflix at the end of the month. It is so good - and not just for #kdrama fans. Definitely recommend making the time for it before it disappears.

I also wish there was more acknowledgement of how video platforms open you up to far more personal security risk than text based platforms. Even if you can do video and would be good on video, there can be very sensible reasons not to do video.

So damn awful that when HK and everyone connected to the city is mourning such a horrific tragedy, we're also having to defend our culture from misinformation and denigration, and very real risk that it will lead to further loss of our heritage.

060

Cathy @cathyr.bsky.social · 28/11/2025

Not really sure why you're doubling down on blaming bamboo despite the contrary local reports. We've had over 100 years of using bamboo as the main form of scaffolding in HK and very little history of related fires. It's a sustainable material and has important advantages and heritage.

020

Cathy @cathyr.bsky.social · 28/11/2025

The 1996 Garley Building fire had multiple convening factors and while bamboo was involved - it wasn't the "trigger". Even the Wikipedia article you quoted attributes it being started by hot falling metal from negligent welding and then it being ignored.
