I've been trying to paint more just for fun and here's one I did of my husband falling asleep on the couch watching wrestling. I call it "Quarter Past Twelve"
a painting of a moody night-time interior scene of a man in a red shirt asleep on a couch. a tv mounted on the wall is on but unclear what's playing. through an arched doorway, a spill of warm light across the floor.

Texas
Catherine Weiss
We moved in February, left all the cars parked along on E 11th street, lumps under Manhattan snow. Rented a McMansion in the ‘burbs, filling the carpeted bedrooms up with unauthorized subletting roommates. Jake joined a band, which played covers of John Mayer songs and Wagon Wheel at bars in Austin and Shreveport. Jake, who played cello and didn’t love me anymore. None of us had jobs. I volunteered in the back office of the humane society where I was chastised for investigating petty cash thievery of another volunteer. I adopted a fluffy white puppy. I didn’t write a screenplay. By June it was too hot to walk barefoot on pavement. I tried to be good. I tried so hard to make it work. Before Texas, I didn’t know dogs could scream.

TWO POEMS
Catherine Weiss
Fishtank

As kids, we kept tetras (boring),
a cory or two (better),
and memorably, a mystery snail
who’d crawl up the filter and jump—
He’d go repeatedly, which delighted us,
but I have since learned from Reddit
his antics may have been a distress behavior.
A leaping snail might be starving,
or trying to escape a poorly maintained tank,
no air to breathe. Sometimes it’s overcrowding.
I worry our snail was tired of being alone.
Once I rode the L six stops
past midnight to meet a Craigslist stranger
who asked to paint my portrait,
as long as I was wearing white.

my dad is funny. he likes to talk on the phone and he's a film archivist by profession so he'll do things like call me up and just tell me about weird home movies they have in the collection and keep going until his phone dies--which is what happened just now. it's like a little cliffhanger.

once on a dating app I saw a guy’s profile that said “I enjoy films such as We Bought a Zoo” which is very funny but also the set-up & payoff of that simple sentence encapsulates my whole deal as a poet -an inscrutable art made legible -highbrow expectation w/ lowbrow execution -matt damon 👍

the found poetry of the unhinged email subject lines from a democrat running for office trying desperately to get $15 dollars
a screenshot of email inbox all from Jordan Wood with subject lines:
"fucking pussy"
falling apart
final 2 hours
I'm begging you, Catherine
my gay marriage, Catherine
not a typo
"little son of a bitch, socialist c*cksuck...
dead in the water
I sincerely apologize, Catherine
"the enemy... are people of color"
I'm out
"you both belong in camps until you die"
I'm begging, Catherine

this was one of my poems published in BOMB last year (truly a highlight of my poetic life) but I feel like it might remain, unfortunately, somewhat relevant
a poem: black text on white background

BOMB

Watching Titanic Instead of CNN
We’re in the second half, where everyone knows this shit is going underwater.
The old men are dressed in their finest evening attire, sipping brandy
as the frothing freezing sea maws up the ship’s throat to wet their spats.
Our heroes are chased by gun-wielding Billy Zane into the lower decks—
up top, the string quartet plays over a montage of hopeless passengers.
My favorite is when the guy doinks off the big propellor. Not enough boats,
Jack. Not enough life jackets, Jack. Look, Jack, you’re going in the water.
Nothing we can do about that now. Movie’s been out for twenty-seven years, Jack
No way to change the ending. Oh, are ya blue, Jack? Don’t ya get it yet, Jack?

I was at AWP but I left early so I could go home and paint "Boromir Tastes the Ring"
a photo of an amateur painting depicting Boromir from Lord of the Rings tasting the one ring with blue sky and mountains in the background. above the painting is a reference image from the movie, printed out and taped to the easel, of Boromir holding the one ring, but not tasting it.

my crankiest poetry take is currently that while i like erasure poetry in theory, a lot of it is simply reversing the position of the original text, and that's so boring. and don't get me started on erasures of kind rejection emails to make them sound mean lol

when there's popular media for 12 year old boys (john wick) everyone is basically fine with it conceptually but when a movie is meant for 12 year old girls (wuthering heights) all of a sudden there's some kind of crisis

a Winter Olympics poem from Griefcake
TURNING ON THE WINTER OLYMPICS
AFTER A LOSS
To the TV, I mutter I just want to see one of these guys eat it and the competitor currently landing a complex combo of spins and twists immediately crumples his body against the hard-packed slope, out of running for a medal.
I didn't do this to him but I did put it on the table.
I'm rooting for the Swede who enthusiastically barks at the cameraman like a seal. He eventually gets bronze.
An American snags silver. The men's freeski Big Air Olympic gold goes to Norway's Birk Rud. These are X Games guys, Olympians who looks like burnouts.
I like everything about this. The rough sound of skis and snow, and then the silence as a human soars through the air. I think there should be more sports where people fly. Consider how strong your legs must be to land without crashing every time. Consider getting up after you fail as the world watches. And what kind of person does it take to try Big Air for the first time? To look up at the sky—at God—and say no worries man, I'm coming to you.

in honor of Lord of the Rings: The Hunt For Gollum, here's a LOTR fanfic I wrote in ~1991, recovered from a file on the old family Tandy 1000. if, at any point in the upcoming film, Ian McKellen cages Andy Serkis and feeds him buttons, you'll know I got ripped off by WB
a page of printed text in all caps.
BY CATHERINE
THE SHORT VERSION OF THE HOBBIT
GOLLUM WAS THINKING ABOUT GETTING THE RING BACK. HE SAW BILBO BUT HE DID NOT KNOW THAT BILBO HAD IT. GANDALF CHASED GOLLUM OUT OF THE LAKE. GOLLUM SCREAMED, "AAAAAA." GOLLUM HID UNDER A ROCK.
HE WAS SCARED AND IT WAS RAINING. HE DIDN'T WANT TO HAVE THE RING BACK FOR ALL THIS. ALL THAT HE WANTED THEN WAS TO GET BACK TO HIS HOME.
BIFUR AND BOMBUR WERE LOOKING IN THE WOODS FOR GANDALF. OIN AND GLOIN CAUGHT GOLLUM AND THEN THEY WERE LOOKING AROUND FOR GANDALF TO SHOW HIM THAT THEY HAD CAUGHT GOLLUM.
ALL THE TIME GANDALF WAS HIDING FROM THE RAIN UNDER ANOTHER ROCK.
ALL FOUR DWARVES FOUND GANDALF. GANDALF PUT GOLLUM IN A CAGE.
GANDOLF JUST GAVE HIM BUTTONS TO EAT. "HE WON'T DO ANY HARM IN THERE, " SAID GANDALF.
AT LAST THEY FOUND BILBO. BILBO SAID," FOR A NEW DAY TO COME, ITS WORTH 16 DOLLARS." ALL THE DWARVES LAUGHED. EVEN GANDALF LAUGHED.
THE END.

apropos of nothing but when authors describe characters with "wide eyes" i know intellectually they usually mean A but my brain always translates to B
a rough hand drawn figure of two icons of faces. the circle marked A has big round eyes with a vertical arrow indicating tall. the circle marked B has two digon shaped eyes that are far apart with a horizontal arrow indicating width.
