Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 02/10/2026My favorite office decor piece. Goethe overnighted in a lot of places and it gets commemorated with a plaque. He never made it to Ohio though, hence the sign. 😆😆😆 070

Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I was obsessed with this show as a kid in Australia. I found the opening with the symbols being drawn on a chalkboard hypnotic. And then brooding Dr. Casey was equally enthralling! 000

Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 26/09/2026It’s a very weird experience going back and forth (already very Heideggerian) btw the English & German. The feel is different: there’s a strange/wacky lyricism to the German. 010

Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 23/09/2026It’s two in English: Verzeih! Forgive me! Gosh it’s powerful, mainly because we have gotten to so familiar with Castorp‘s inner workings. 020
Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 23/09/2026One of t most poignant moments in a novel full of them comes amidst a wacky calling of t spirits when Castorp utters one word upon seeing t vision of his poor dead cousin who, we feel as readers, he didn’t pay enough attention to. Castorp HAS changed/grown up after all. #TheMagicMountain 240
Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Yes most definitely: most famously in Perrault‘s Little Thumbling. A great fairytale „object“. I’ll check whether they pop up anywhere in Grimm. I think so but confess I’m not familiar with all 200+ of the Grimm tales. 100
Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 21/09/2026There are a lot of fairytale references, and the 7 obsession is part of that. (Also biblical of course). 010
Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 20/09/2026One very basic difference between Heidegger in German vs English is how noun and even compound noun heavy it all is. English turns these word lumps into prepositional phrases that causes them to loose some of their „uumph“ Seinsverständnis=understanding of Being #SeinundZeit #BeingandTime 180

Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 19/09/2026The one from Oxford World Classics by Simon Pare. I've come across a few instances where the meaning seems slightly off, but am in awe of all translators: such difficult work! I'd like to comepare it to the Porter-Lowe one. She was so interesting! 010

Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Nietzsche did come to mind at same point too: I've just started my "journey" with being and time, I'll see if I can find the passage that reminded me of Nietzsche with whom I'm only superficially familiar. These first sections also seem to be echoing Kant's Critique of Pure Reason a lot. 010

Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 18/09/2026In #TheMagicMountain #DerZauberberg Drunk Peeperkorn, very appropriately imo calls Hans a "SchwätzerCHEN", but in my translation they just say "blabbermouth" leaving off the diminutive "chen" which both belittles but also softens the insult to sth akin to "LITTLE chatterer/windbag". 110
Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Yes!! and the way Heidegger will raise the question is by proposing we need to go back to "noticing". (after some discussion surrounding the question itself, and "who" is asking it). 110

Cathie Grimm @catgrimm.bsky.social · 18/09/2026It reminds of characters discussing attitudes towards illness and death in Magic Mountain. Romanticizing it versus the fact there’s nothing romantic about actual tuberculosis. 010
