My favorite office decor piece. Goethe overnighted in a lot of places and it gets commemorated with a plaque. He never made it to Ohio though, hence the sign. 😆😆😆

One of t most poignant moments in a novel full of them comes amidst a wacky calling of t spirits when Castorp utters one word upon seeing t vision of his poor dead cousin who, we feel as readers, he didn’t pay enough attention to. Castorp HAS changed/grown up after all. #TheMagicMountain

One very basic difference between Heidegger in German vs English is how noun and even compound noun heavy it all is. English turns these word lumps into prepositional phrases that causes them to loose some of their „uumph“ Seinsverständnis=understanding of Being #SeinundZeit #BeingandTime

In #TheMagicMountain #DerZauberberg Drunk Peeperkorn, very appropriately imo calls Hans a "SchwätzerCHEN", but in my translation they just say "blabbermouth" leaving off the diminutive "chen" which both belittles but also softens the insult to sth akin to "LITTLE chatterer/windbag".

"The very fact that we already live in an understanding of Being and that the meaning of Being is still veiled in darkness proves that it is necessary in principle to raise this question again." Getting ready for my @brooklyninstitute.bsky.social seminar on Heidegger's #BeingandTime. #SeinundZeit

Just watched Guy Ritchie’s The Gentlemen, which was pretty good! Hugh Grant with a cockney? accent. Witty dialogue, good music, meta frame narrative.

Settembrini´s grandfather is described as a "wühlerische Existenz", which just sounds more satisfying than the translation "inflammatory existence" (which does capture the meaning, but just at the word level is less impressive). #TheMAgicMountain #DerZauberberg #ThomasMann

As early voting starts for Berlin's September 20 state and district elections, it is worth knowing that today's district assembly system (take a deep breath: "Bezirksverordnetenversammlungen"), goes back in spirit to the Prussian Reforms of 1808, which established the first true municipal councils.

Prior to the Hardenberg-Stein reforms the Prussian towns east of the river Elbe were under the state's direct control, with any surviving instances of self-government retaining their names and forms but none of their power. Stein's reform of the towns used this former tradition of self-government. All rights specific to a certain city were abolished and all the cities put under the same structures and rule – this even came to be the case for their courts and police. Self-government was at the centre of the town reforms of 1808, with the towns now no longer subject to the state and their citizens given a duty to participate in the towns' political life. This was the strongest indication of Stein's rejection of a centralised bureaucracy – self-government had to awaken its citizens' interest in public affairs in order to benefit the whole Prussian state.

The Städteordnung (Municipal Ordinance) of 1808 defined a citizen (or at least a citizen in the sense of the inhabitant of a town or city) as "a citizen or member of an urban community which possesses the right of citizenship in a town". The municipal councillors were representatives of the town and not of an order or estate. These councillors could be elected by all landowning citizens with a taxable revenue of at least 15 taler. A councillor's main task was to participate in the election of a municipal council or Magistrat, headed by a mayor. The election of the mayor and the members of the council had to be ratified by the central government. Different officials were put in place to carry out administrative portfolios. The council managed the municipal budget and the town also managed its own police.
