"silicon manufacturers deliberately deprecated generic hardware serial numbers on consumer silicon two decades ago" Yes. They did. Because it was pointless in the age of virtual computing.

I could read this paragraph all day. "If you want to understand Brad Bradford, the deeply polarizing and often baffling leading challenger for Toronto’s mayor, I think you need to start here — June 26, 2023. That’s the night Olivia Chow won the mayoral byelection to replace John Tory. It’s the […]

"...current estimated lead time is approximately 125 days. However, they won’t be able to confirm availability until an order is placed..." I have to place on order to find out how long it will take for me not to receive it. Gawd things suck so hard now.

Fun times. Trying to source cheap solid state PCs (I.e. not a typical desktop PC) from China because normal Western PC suppliers have lead times of 4 months, minimum. These used to be stock items. Order today, get within 3 days type of things.

"I don't buy hardware anymore. I've outsourced all of that to an MSP and let them deal with that headache." I just lied through my teeth to a cold caller, and I feel deliciously wonderful about it. "Well thank you for your honesty sir, you have a nice day now." MWAH HA HA HA HA HA HA!

It takes a strong opinionated asshole in the IT Department to push back at the vendor and say "Nope! It's your shit that's breaking, you figure it out!" Fortunately that is me, and it's my job. Unfortunately... it's my job. But the thing is, instead of a smaller "blame game" loop of Client OS […]

I will die on this hill, literally, because this is killing me. Turning critical applications into "web apps" is the dumbest thing to ever happen in the IT world. A lot of finger-pointing and "it's the network!" bullshit tracking down why a brand new version of an application times out the […]

I am honestly losing track of what's what here, because SpaceX has so fucking many stupid ideas waiting for FCC approval right now. The comment period is currently open for SpaceX's "Gen3" Starlink satellites, where they want to have 100,000 more Starlink satellites in extremely low orbits. If […]

I think the terrifyingly huge SpaceX Starship launch that's happening right now is the one that's planning to deploy a bunch of the new Starlinks that are not actually approved by the FCC yet because SpaceX knows that the FCC will eventually approve them because they approve literally everything […]

We’ve officially reached the point where hearing your spouse’s voice on the phone isn’t enough proof that it’s actually them. That sounds ridiculous until you realize voice-cloning scams are already here. Have a code word. Call the person back directly […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

Screenshot from another platform:
Just had the creepiest scam ever happen
| got a call from my wife telling me she forgot her
wallet and needed the credit card to pay for her gas.
Except my wife was at home with me, and drives a Tesla.
Same voice, bit... off, weird cadence but 100% sounded
just like her. If she wasn't there, and it wasn't about
gas | would have fallen for it.
| entertained it for awhile to get more out of it, | was so
confused. Must be some sort of voice deepfake.
The responses were too fast for ai, | think it was a voice
filter. | wish | had thought to record it.
The future is about to get fucked. Warn your loved ones,
do verbal passwords with your kids.
Bit taken aback.

I'm recruiting for a junior project management role in my team, and the recruiter who is screening folks just wrote this note: "answers started off strong and then became very vague and then became very AI" No thanks.
