A thread about a great cat, and the post-retirement creative evolution of a great artist, in 20 images...

My late cat The Bear in a box marked Hotel California, realising he can check out but he can never leave.

A million years ago, when I owned one of these beasts, I loved to take short road trips on the Pacific Coast Highway and the first song on the mix tape I'd always throw on was this... it was the perfect soundtrack.

Right?! I pondered posting The Muffs cover version, which I love, but figured someone would definitely want to post the original. Kim Shattuck's gravelly voice and all-time great scream really worked well for the song. Heck, might as well post it now... Not a token.

Did you know that many politicians and far-right groups are attempting to deny your freedom to simply check out a book by defunding libraries over books and programs? It's true, and they may be coming for your library next. buff.ly/TMxtf5F #library #libraries #read #reading #book #books

They're coming for your public library (updated)

They aren't stopping with Llano County, Texas or the state of Missouri. They'll be coming for your public library next.

At best they seem to be "winging it" to debatabe success. At worst they are just wrecking their children.

I work in a library and I often hear (childless) co-workers say things like "I defer to the parents" followed by some form of "parents know best" and I'm always like- have you not MET parents?!?!

Also...I immediatly bought (or pre-ordered) both of their albums on vinyl.

I discovered them a few months back and have been waiting for an excuse to share them on the jukebox. Love their whole lowrider oldies sound which I'm a big fan of. Very reminiscent of the songs featured on the old Art Laboe's "Dedicated to You" show on KRLA... or K-Órale as it was commonly known.

I know I've mentioned this previously on the jukebox, but I love plugging my cool step-uncle Steve - my cool step-uncle Steve did the cover art for this record!

Also, thinking she may already be a neighbors outside cat. Appears to be fairly well fed.

This was in the last hour. She's been showing up every morning and afternoon for about a week. Debating taking her in, but our current cat has a history of not getting along with newer/younger kitties.

Or just a way to view previous ones? When I search on bluesky nothing earlier than the current juke box appears.

CatdaddyJ @catdaddyj.bsky.social · 20/09/2026

Is there an archive of old juke boxes? I'm somewhat new to it and would love to see past tokens.

Another (very early) Nina Hagen song I thought of using. Though I should probaby keep these in reserve for possible similar juke boxes!

Haha! I know. I remember once when I was staying with my family at a B&B in London in the early-ish 80s, we going to take a trip up to see Stonehenge and the proprietress of the place insisted on sending us off with a sizable pack-lunch to carry us over on our "long" journey. We were, um, bemused.

This was when she was living/teaching in Los Cruces, NM. About the same time she brought me along on a cross-country road trip from there to NYC to attend the Workers Progress convention, where a 12/13 year old me (much to her chagrin) drank Chinese snake wine with the leader of the WP of the US.

CatdaddyJ @catdaddyj.bsky.social · 19/09/2026

Yep. She also once introduced me to Alex Cox (Dir. of Repo Man - another fave!) who she had met at a film festival in Cuba.

Cool thing about my Mom - she's a little (seriously, she's like 5'1") Southern white lady from a podunk town in the Florida panhandle who happens to be fluent in Spanish and also have PhD in film studies... she's a bit of a bad-ass.

CatdaddyJ @catdaddyj.bsky.social · 19/09/2026

We saw saw it together at a Xmas eve matinee at the old Sunset 5 then had lunch the Argentinian steak joint in the same plaza. It was quite lovely.

CatdaddyJ @catdaddyj.bsky.social · 19/09/2026

Absolutely! My wife and I watch it every other Xmas eve - we rotate between it and Hogfather. Fun fact, my Mom (in her 50s at the time) turned me on to it in '98 when it played in LA! She had seen it at it's film festival premier in Spain a year or two earlier and figured it was right up my alley.

Yeah, I work in a public library and my work week is Tues - Sat, so I'm usually trying to get them in before I go to work. Fortunately the two songs I did post were ones I'd been hoping for an excuse to post. Though now I have a bunch more tunes I'm now waiting for an excuse to post. C'est la vie!
