A new regular in my backyard. She was hovering around my bird feeders last weekend, but I didn’t have any hummingbird feeders out. I put some out the next day. And this morning, she made her presence known. What a joy it is to have her in my yard!

Pretty prairie pictures.
A paved path on a sunny day. Foliage lines either side of the path, with trees, brown-eyed susans and spent goldenrod. A small brown sign that says “MILE 9” is among the flowers on the right. A cluster of pinkish-purple New England asters. The prairie and a blue sky with whispy clouds. A wooden structure of some sort is in the distance.

Here’s a drawing I did for the 25th anniversary of 9/11. It is a drawing of my arm reaching for a baseball bat, written under it are the words: “I had a dream that I went to visit all the architects of the war on terror and every single person who voted for the Patriot Act”. Pen and ink on paper.

"But what if instead they used mass surveillance for..." They won't. Not to any extent that matters. That's not the point of it, and everyone in a position of power knows it. Kill the part of you that wants to find a loophole to let the police state in. The answer has to just be "no."

Column | More Americans are buying groceries on credit. Here’s why that’s a problem.
Families are paying for groceries with revolving debt, which then traps them into accumulating years of interest payments for food they’ve long since consumed.

A festering wound, busted open and weeping for all to see. The fumes of rotting flesh knocking some of us over, others know enough to cover their nose, and some others are just used to the smell. No one should be used to this smell. The blood and pus flow towards my anxious feet. Now what?

Putting fresh water out for the beleaguered wildlife, knowing it probably won’t help them with the wildfire smoke but hoping it is better than nothing. We’re in a terrible heatwave right now too. I’m scared for them. But hey, at least the fellas in the oil and gas industry are still rich. 👍

These mercenaries make money solely by brutalizing, terrorizing, kidnapping, and torturing members of your community. And it's your tax money they are putting in their pockets. ICE cannot be reformed. Every single person associated with the agency is there for the express purpose of doing evil.

It started with Haymarket in 1886, when four anarchists were hanged for a bombing none of them committed. Then came the Anarchist Exclusion Act, the raids on the Wobblies, the Palmer deportations, COINTELPRO, the Green Scare, and now Antifa.

Day 3 of #BlackBirdersWeek reminded me how much habitat birds have lost to development. Yesterday brought Bird Joy: a Mallard family on the lake, a singing female Red-winged Blackbird, a proud Grackle, and a Green Heron posing perfectly. Plant natives. Volunteer. Advocate. #WiscoBirder 🖤
A Green Heron stands in shallow water covered in bright green algae and aquatic vegetation. The bird’s chestnut neck, dark green back, and sharp yellow eye are illuminated by sunlight as it carefully watches the water for prey. A female Mallard swims across calm water with four fuzzy ducklings closely surrounding her. The ducklings paddle beside their mother while soft reflections ripple across the lake surface. A female Red-winged Blackbird looks directly toward the camera while perched in leafy green branches. Her streaked brown feathers and warm orange tones on the face are illuminated by sunlight. A Common Grackle perches among tall green grasses and wetland plants. The bird’s glossy black feathers shimmer with iridescent blue tones around its head and neck.
