We had a blast last week hosting our first in-person Energy Data Lab, and getting to know 20 early career researchers and practitioners. Thanks to @sloanfoundation.bsky.social for the support, and to @macroenergysystems.org for letting us piggyback on the MES workshop. #EnergySky
A diverse group of 20 students and 3 instructors at the front of a classroom posing for a group photo in front of a large flat panel display that says "Open Energy Data For All: Energy Data Lab" The students are mostly women of color. Everyone looks cheerful.

Electricity affordability and cost drivers are big news these days, so we made a dashboard that lets you explore related FERC & EIA data in PUDL. It's not *simple* but the rate-base composition is pretty interesting. #EnergySky #DataViz #OpenData #Electricity data.catalyst.coop/dashboards/r...
A stacked bar chart showing the composition of the rate-base of US electric utilities over the last 30 years, based on FERC Form 1 data. There are many categories, but the transmission and distribution slices are quite large, and have been growing over time. Note these numbers are not adjusted for inflation.

Deep Agents is an open source project from LangChain to let anybody build their own model-agnostic agent harness (tools like Claude Code or Codex). Love that the mascot of their (proof-of-concept) CLI is a (presumably stochastic) parrot. 🦜 github.com/langchain-ai...
TUI interface to the Deep Agents based coding CLI, with text in greent, and a very pixelated parrot mascot. The agent says Hello, world!

Wow. Last week a bunch of new people discovered our free, public FERC EQR Parquet dataset on S3. It details billions of US electricity transactions covering 2013Q3-2025Q4. They downloaded more than 2 TB of data. #EnergySky #OpenData #Electricity
A chart showing three different views of S3 usage over the last quarter, from the beginning of 2026 to the end of March. It shows daily unique IPs, GB of data downloaded, and normalized file downloads. The GB downloaded has a huge spike in the last week of the chart.

For example, here's Xcel Energy Colorado's Cherokee plant generation by fuel telling the tale of its conversion from coal to gas. And then also total generation broken out by generator.

An agent skill for PUDL? /pudl In the open scratch notebook, read the EIA923 fuel receipts and costs table using polars, and make a plot in matplotlib that shows the average (mean) price of different fuel types, weighted by the total heat content of that fuel each month.
A horizontal line plot showing the cost per unit of energy of gas, oil, and coal delivered to power plants each month in the US from 2008-2025, weighted by total delivered heat content of each fuel. The plot uses a dark theme, with the three plotted lines appearing in bright colors.

Daayum, did not realize how skewed battery storage deployment was The future is here, but *very* unevenly distributed. #EnergySky From GridLab's Storage Gap Report gridlab.org/portfolio-it...
A bar chart showing how much battery storage is in operation, under construction, or pending approval in major US grid regions. CAISO and ERCOT tower above MISO, PJM, SPP and the Southeast.

Total daily uplift charges by ISO, from 2013Q3 through 2025Q3, based on @ferc.gov EQR data. It only takes 20 seconds to calculate from 5 billion records in Parquet! #OpenData #EnergySky #DataViz #Electricity

Also we can finally see *weekends* in our usage metrics, which feels like some kind of milestone. Downloads from our AWS Open Data Registry S3 bucket:

The NREL ATB (electricity) data was also more commonly used than we imagined -- we need to better document that it's all available in PUDL and how to work with it alongside other datasets:

Our sample was only N=47, and it's certainly biased, but we found that we have more for-profit and fewer NGO users than we imagined.

Since our energy data archiving efforts got some coverage a couple of weeks ago traffic on our @datasette.io instance at data.catalyst.coop has increased 50x! It seems to be a bot that's ignoring our robots.txt. If this is you, all the data is also freely available in an S3 bucket. #EnergySky

Thankfully the flaw Vonnegut mentions isn't universal. We love doing maintenance! However... grant funders & clients don't always share our enthusiasm. So in 2025 we're evolving our open energy data funding model. 🧵 1/n #OpenData #OpenSource #EnergySky
A portrait of Kurt Vonnegut looking back over his shoulder at the camera. Next to his face is a quote "Another flaw in the human character is that everybody wants to build and nobody wants to do maintenance."

Hi y'all, we're a little all-remote worker co-op that does software and data engineering for folks working on the energy transition, mostly in Python, mostly open source and open data. We play data janitor for EIA, FERC, and other public sources so you (hopefully) don't have to.
A group photo of all the Catalyst Cooperative members on our first retreat with the Rocky Mountains of Colorado in the background. We are wearing jackets and puffies because it's May, and Colorado is not warm in May.

Digging a little more, it looks like American Energy (the supplier) has also been charging some wild prices to other buyers. As much as $12-14/MMBTU for BIT.

It would be nice to make this into an interactive visualization like you often see for stock charts -- with a dropdown to select state or balancing authority code, and a little chart at the bottom that lets you select the date range.
