Spectre of autism. I have a reputation for being very boring.

Always a classic. Next up: Making it run Doom.

If you look at the timeline, they tanked it and then bought it, ending up on the hook for a lot of golden parachutes.

Not really. The bad parts of the potato are clearly visible and don't spread enough to get you a meaningful problem.

The numbers aren’t supposed to make any sense and the 2008 maneuver just made things worse. The economy already crashed a while ago. You talk to Canadians, they have a much clearer view on it. We’re not seeing much on the European side, it’s just more “Americans gonna American”.

casstone.bsky.social @casstone.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Oh, no, this is just an economic crash. The AI is window dressing over the fact that the US economy hollowed itself out. The rebuilding won’t be much worse than elsewhere and the rest of the world is doing much the same as we did before all this. People have recovered from worse.

Can't even disagree. Still, I count every game where you meander along piecing together how you were always doomed among that genre.

Eventually we'll have a machine that generates code with little effort. It'll look like a smarter compiler and more robust libraries. Not Microsoft Bob on a $500 000 000 server. You know, the exact pattern of progress for the past few decades.

Anyone who's ever fixed anyone else's code has the required understanding to know LLMs are just useless toys. Anyone who understands diminishing returns knows it can't get better using pattern replication, you need to model the logic. Someone who doesn't understand both is not a good programmer.

You can do every machine stitch by hand too, you just need a few millennia to replicate a serger. The backstitch is neat, I do a two-line variant with triangles when I need extra stretch so every little triangle gives extra. Bonus: Easy to repair pulled loops.

casstone.bsky.social @casstone.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
... what, exactly, did you think the machines do? There's a stitch for most everything and they aren't really more complex than "can the fabric move?".

casstone.bsky.social @casstone.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
For all their tech genius braggadocio, they sure can't design themselves out of a paper bag. "wouldn't it be cool" isn't "how do we make this scalable and maintainable".
020
casstone.bsky.social @casstone.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Very bad idea if you don't verify it directly from the source material, because that bit about the output resembling the source data the more processing you throw at it means the AI's going to "invent" a new version that matches what it's "expecting". Useful in competent hands... only.

casstone.bsky.social @casstone.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Computer vision, the backbone to image/video generation meanwhile? Fucking magic on extremely large inputs, especially on data sets humans can't parse. Using it to generate bad looking food is a bad idea. All of this is a billion dollar market with trillions in investor money though.
010
casstone.bsky.social @casstone.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Some of these technologies do, but the useful ones are specialist tools. All LLMs can really do is find patterns in text, so they could quickly find fuzzy matches in a large corpus of text, and they can generate text comprehensible to untrained humans from other systems. Or fancier lorem ipsum.

casstone.bsky.social @casstone.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Every last real expert went "why is this shit reappearing, we know it doesn't do anything due to the recursive conformation to training data", but... that will never protect a sucker from a get rich quick scheme. The industry moves in very predictable cycles, see one see them all.

casstone.bsky.social @casstone.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Oh, if you think LLMs are anything beyond a parlor trick to create the appearance of cognition, you understand nothing about machine learning, so ya know, the AI bros never knew anything about anything. Funnier, it's a retread of an idea from the 80's, beat for beat. Nothing new under the sun.

Well, that's not true. NHS has been going this way for over a decade. They're really bad people who were chomping at the bit to decide some people are unworthy as soon as nobody was stopping them.

Gives me strong "sit down and make your horses sit down too" energy, I already know the rush from finding the answer to solve all your problems doesn't last, and I only deal in reality, so all promises of happiness are like water off a duck's back. We don't get to be anyone else than who we are.

It makes me real annoying - romance, community, or self-improvement haven't ever been possible for me and the future odds don't look good either, so I went straight for being myself and ignored the idea of being happy one day. I'm still me no matter what I do, and that ain't good.

I'm going full Incubus at the feast that's coming. Using LLMs at the core means you need ever increasing computing power to improve, so this will crash because there is no source of infinite compute. But after that the tech field will be wide open for new projects. And these guys aren't prepared.
010
casstone.bsky.social @casstone.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
I would never fight for a better world. Good thing I don't have to, AI will fall apart all on its own. The thing about tech is that tech isn't good or evil, the people are, and the techbros can't stop trying to ruin their own lives. Narcissus would be envious.
