The framing of this one is a little off. However, I am still pretty happy with the final piece. This is "the Caucus Race" from Alice in Wonderland where the animals and Alice run a circular race that goes into the sea in a futile effort to dry off. #embroidery 🎨 🧶 🪡 🧵

Turkey and potato croquettes sound amazing. Perhaps I will make some with the leftovers ham and cheese since my Turkey is all used up now!

My reaction to this was visceral and immediate. Well done art!

Same here! I just don't experience an aversion to French knots. This was my first attempt to use them and I could have gone on forever. :) Now all I want is an excuse.

First #poem I have written since I was a teen. It has been bumping around in my mind for a bit and needed to get out. #politics #LGBTQ #blacklivesmatter #BLM #femanism #poetry #resist #environment #truth
One Day

One day I wake too agitated to tap the screen
My throat clenches as I brush my teeth
They are there, behind my teeth, behind my eyes
I can't keep them out, they are in my mind

One day, they will all have been against this

One day I cringe from the signs as I pilot
My car through a jungle of land minds
I must watch the road, not close my eyes
Against the signs that are signs of vehemence

One day they will all have been against this

One day I am at my tasks, trying to complete
My labor in spite of knowing that they are
At their labor, crouched like gremlins in committee
As they seek to pass prohibitions to abiding

One day they will all have been against this all along

This is gorgeous, all those French knots! Is there padding under the stitches on the tiger?

No worries! I appreciate someone trying to help as I hate using work unatributed or without permission. Most of the old Alice illustrations are out of copyright and fair game. However, it's for my personal use and altered too...so meh

I do a lot of his illustrations and have lists with names and dates, but I just haven't found evidence of him doing this one yet. It's for sure in the same style

The newest WIP #embroidery #art is the caucus race. I love this image but can't find the source. Just 1 person sharing on Flickr, so if you know the illustration please share. I altered it by adding enough to make it round (circular frame planned) and adding the mouse. 🧶🪡🧵
Original black and white rectangular image of the caucus race frome Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Various animals, bugs, birds, a dodo etc running in a circle to dry off. The circular path leads them in and out of water. Same image with the right and left sides penciled in to extend the design into a round image.Image is transfered to linen fabric and drawn in sharpie. Here's the plastic inner/back part of the round wooden hoop that this will be mounted in to show shape. Image inside embroidery frame with approximately 1/8th of the black outlines of animals stitched.

I'm struggling to find a version of the jaberwock that will translate well into embroidering and I may end up drawing one from the source art available. I would like to feature at least part of the poem in that one.

Thank you! I am going to be doing both the more "mainstream" characters and the obscure "from the book" scenes. I anticipate 18-20 total scenes, many of which, though not all, based on the Tenniel artwork.

Prairie Fires is a very well written interesting biography. It has lead me down a rabbit hole of other work I am going to consume. I currently have an audible membership though I will be dropping it again soon and that was one of the free to listen selections.

I could absolutely see Anderson in that role. I am listening to a biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder called "Prairie Fires" right now and just re-watched the TV series and reread those books. I have been contemplating art from that series after this! There are a TON more from the art I want to do.

4th installment in my Alice's Adventures in Wonderland series. Original art "Alice ... with the Duchess" illustration drawn by John Tenniel, (1885). Favorite so far and my first time using several new stitches (French knots, leaf stitch, brick stitch.) 🧶🪡🧵 #embroidery #art #fiberart
Framed in oval wood, Alice holding a flamingo stitched freehand walking through a garden with overhanging French knot trees. The Duchess is wearing Tudor style clothing. Same image unframed: Alice holding a flamingo stitched freehand walking through a garden with overhanging French knot trees. The Duchess is wearing Tudor style clothing. Black and white drawing of the image pre-stitch in sharpie on linen.

The reality on homesteads is that what they largely did was (a) plant a large amount of cash crop and (b) plant a smaller kitchen garden. If your cash crop came in, most of it would get sold, which would then get traded for machinery / subsistence food to make it through winter.

Entirely true. My entire life, I've disliked tomatoes. I try to eat healthy, so I kept trying to like them. Last year, I grew heirloom tomatoes for the first time for my husband. I tried them and couldn't get enough. He graciously let me eat most of the garden. This year, I'm growing way more!

Not disputing anything you are saying here. The context of my comments is in response to what the OP was saying about the real level of hardship people faced and you stating that you don't think the people discussing it are considering the economic benefits to people who kept livestock.
110
Into the Darkness @casssample.bsky.social · 30/01/2025
Romanticism of that life isn't accurate though, nor is it fair to blame the poverty and suffering of the times on people just not raising enough livestock. The OP points out that for most people the real US farm story involved poverty, set backs and destruction and that is historically correct.

Into the Darkness @casssample.bsky.social · 30/01/2025
I am not diminishing the hard work, accomplishments or success stories of your ancestors. About 40% of homesteaders succeeded and a certain percentage of those had financial gains, (mostly those that had capital to invest or the luck to be in areas that missed the ecological disasters.)

Farm income fell by 63% during the great depression but through the 1870's to early 1900's it was far from easy for any homesteader to gain ground. Charles Ingalls tried cattle farming to break the cycle of crop poverty but without capital to invest, that was a dead end. Which is the OP's point.

Into the Darkness @casssample.bsky.social · 30/01/2025
In reality, nothing is identical for all people. To succeed with livestock you have to have the capital to gain and foothold. Some, like your ancestor certainly made that work with hard work. Many others who worked equally hard were broken over and over by cycles of drought and hardship.

Oklahoma, like many poor rural communities was very conservative and while FDR had immense national support, there was a lot of opposition too. There were rashes of articles with interviews like you talk about telling people how "not bad" American farming really was.
100
Into the Darkness @casssample.bsky.social · 30/01/2025
That makes a lot of sense. Oklahoma was hit with the biggest impacts from the GD around 1930. He would have been an old man who got in during a sweet spot between the original homesteader's many of which tried livestock and busted and the depression that ruined the economic stability of many.

That is amazing and really unique work! I am going to be doing french knots for the first time to do the "trees" above the heads of the characters in this classic illustration from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland that I am working on and yours is inspiring next level french knot work!
Work in progress of an embroidery version of the 1865 artwork by John Tenniel for Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. This is "the Duchess" standing with Alice under trees holding a flamingo. The Tudor style hat face and robes of the duchess are finished but the rest of the work is back-stitch outlines. There are drawn fluffy trees above the two character's heads.
