A new month means a new theme for our recommendations! Of course, October means this month will be focused on all things spooky and paranormal. Join us as we highlight titles that deal with Hell, monsters, horror, and alterity. Let's kick it off with "Monsters in Society" by Rebecca Merkelbach!
Cover of "Monsters in Society."Graphic reading: "Employing literary and cultural theory as well as anthropological and historical approaches, this title reads the monsters of the ‘Íslendingasögur’ in their literary and socio-cultural context, demonstrating that they are not distractions from feud and conflict, but that they are in fact an intrinsic part of the genre’s re-imagining of the past for the needs of the present."

From studying Business to researching Scandinavian literature, cassidycroci.bsky.social took an unconventional path to follow her passion for Vikings and medieval texts. Today, she is on a research stay at unituebingen.bsky.social, supported by the Humboldt Research Fellowship. bit.ly/4qEJgiI

Whoever was responsible for designing the Historic Scotland information board at Wideford Hill Cairn deserves a medal for it.
An excerpt from a signboard. The critical feature is an illustration showing two Neolithic farmers, which is clearly a take-off of American Gothic by Grant Wood.

In June, I found out about a new find via a metal detecting magazine’s FB page. I contacted the local FLO and went to go see it. This is such an exciting find, being a finger ring featuring a long runic inscription. It’s perhaps a mixed script inscription, with both runes and Roman letters.
