Last week was the first week on "Communism". In addition to reading "The Communist Manifesto", we watched "The Life of Others", one of my absolute favorite movies. Tomorrow the topic is "Ostalgie" (nostalgia for the East) and we watch the wonderful Goodbye Lenin! ❤️

I love how political the MLS fan scene is. Much better than most European countries. Respect to @lamurgadeaustin.bsky.social for protesting the ejection of a fan for wearing an anti-ICE shirt last week! 👏

Boom! 💥 Man, Social Democrats defeating the far right. That is going to be such a big media story, right? Right?

Looks like dramatic results in #Brazil 🇧🇷. The far right is ahead in Presidency, Senate, and House. The right-wing turn in Latin America is beyond the breaking point. The only question now is: how far right will it go?

The conservative VVD is now smaller than three (!) far-right parties it has been normalizing over the past decades (JA21, PVV, FvD).

And the last one for today: “Pariah” (2011) is a coming of age/coming out movie about a teenager who is trying to navigate her sexuality within a homophobic and dysfunctional family. Excellent drama with incredibly powerful acting. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #TheEnd

“The Marked Woman” (2026) is a thriller about a Jane Doe with memory loss who is hunted down by a criminal group. Classic conspiracies but good acting and at times great camera work. 🇪🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Oasis” (2025) is a limited series about spoiled rich brats at an expensive resort and the personnel who are trying g to solve a kidnapping of a friend. It’s what Netflix thinks is a steamy thriller but it is fairly mediocre on all fronts. 🇪🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Dark Places” (2015) is a thriller about a woman who accused her brother of killing their family when she was a child and finds out she was wrong as an adult. Strong acting (Charlize Theron) and good weird story with many twists. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

In “Striking Distance” (1993) demoted cop Bruce Willis suspects a cop of being a serial killer. Classic Bruce Willis movie with a lot of action, predictable humor, and a decent story line. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

110

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Cleaner” (2007) is a thriller about an ex-cop who gets dragged back into old conspiracies. While pretty classic story, the fantastic acting (notably Keke Parker) and specific setting make it extra strong. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Fast Charlie” (2014) is an entertaining movie about a hit man who does one last job to get his old friend out of trouble and finds love while he’s at it. Pierce Brosnan doing his thing but it works. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

120

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Siřat” (2026) is a movie about a father who tries to find his daughter at a rave in the dessert and tags along with a group of ravers. Bizarre movie with beautiful scenes, intense music, and brutal story line. 🇪🇸⭐️⭐️⭐️

110

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

In “Project Hail Mary” (2026) Ryan Gosling plays a science teacher who becomes an astronaut who saves earth by collaborating with an alien. Some really nice and funny moments in this very well-produced movie, but it is too long (and I watched it on a transatlantic plane). 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

210

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Michael” (2026) is billed as a drama but is more a propaganda movie about Michael Jackson that addresses none of the interesting and disturbing parts of his life and mostly glorifies the, undoubtedly, unique pop talent. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

100

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Miracle: The Boys of ‘80” (2026) is a documentary about the legendary draft of the storied USSR hockey team by a team of amateur U.S. players. The great part of the docu is the many personal stories and significance of the players, which makes this much more than a big propaganda story. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“On Falling” (2024) is a movie about a Portuguese immigrant who works as a picker in a warehouse in Scotland. While an undoubtedly very accurate portrayal, with some nice cinematographic elements, the life is so empty, sad and boring, the movie is simply unbearable.🇬🇧 ⭐️⭐️

210

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Closing Dynasty” (2023) is a short movie about a cheeky young girl hustling in Chinatown. While cinematographically good and impressive acting by the young girl, it didn’t really go anywhere. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

100

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Crisis” (2021) is a thriller about the opioid crisis from the perspectives of a DEA agent, a biology professor, and a mother of a victim. Excellent movie with intelligent story that is well made and highlights the many moral issues related to the crisis. 🇺🇸⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

151

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Anon” (2018) is a sci-fi crime movie about a hacker and a killer. It is a solid story but the most interesting is to see how people imagined the future in the past and how much is reality now. Still, interesting reflection on privacy and surveillance. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

110

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Parish” (2026) is a limited series about an older man who is dragged into the criminal life he had left for his family. Drenched with personal trauma and set in New Orleans, this rather classic story becomes a very entertaining tv series. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

100

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Killer Joe” (2011) is a crazy thriller about a dysfunctional “trailer trash” family that hires a bend cop/contract killer to kill their mom. Brutal and twisted with strong characters and an insane Matthew McConaughay. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

230

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

Based on a memoir, “The Penguin Lessons” (2024) is a comedy drama that tells the story of an English teacher at a posh private school in 1970s Argentina, who befriends a penguin. Extremely moving acting and story, while it also gives a great insight into the brutality of the junta. 🇬🇧🇪🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

181

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Safe Haven” (2013) is a romantic drama/thriller that is set in a picturesque coastal town in New England that is well made but ends with too much drama and an annoying supernatural twist. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

100

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Mother’s Day” (2016) is a high-powered comedy about the trials and tribulations of a group of different Atlanta mothers. Nothing profound but overall light and very enjoyable. 🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

130

Cas Mudde @casmudde.bsky.social · 02/10/2026

“Legends” (2026) is a limited series about a small group of Customs officers who take down a huge drug smuggle on a shoestring budget and with little training. Fantastic characters, great (real) story, excellent music. 🇬🇧 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

If the sharp decrease in tolerance for gay rights among Dutch youth would be mainly because of "the manosphere" and "far-right parties" than why don't we see a similar development in the U.S., where both are (much) worse... Is there something specifically Dutch? 🧵
