Ellie pretended to look busy as Rawlinson left the room and strode away in the direction of her office, though not before reprimanding one of the interns for loitering by the lockers. Once the matron was out of sight, Ellie ducked inside the records room. There, she found Alison rifling through a manilla folder, an intense look of concentration on her face.

“Alison!” Ellie hissed, exasperated.

“Hm?” the other woman hummed, not even glancing up.

Indignant, Ellie snatched the folder from Alison’s hands and tossed it on the nearby desk. That got her attention. She fixed Ellie with a cold glare. Under normal circumstances, Ellie might have felt perturbed, but she was too angry for that right now. It took a tremendous amount of willpower not to slap her.“What are you doing here?” she demanded. “You know that impersonating a police officer is a crime, right?”

Alison nodded. “I’m sure.”

“Give me one good reason why I shouldn’t call security,” Ellie challenged, placing her hands on her hips. She stood between Alison and the doorway, ensuring that the woman couldn’t make an easy escape. “This is a hospital. We take these things seriously.”

“I thought you were still sick,” Alison responded flatly, as though that were an adequate explanation.

“Shut up,” Ellie snapped, at the end of her tether. She massaged her temples in an attempt to stave off an imminent stress headache. What was Alison’s problem? And why did she keep meeting her like this?

“You’re not going to call security,” Alison said, taking a step forward.

Ellie scoffed in disbelief. “Do you want to bet on that?”
