Bad Apples (★★★1/2) – Has an either-or premise, but it rides it out to a very strong end result, between its tonal handling, biting satire, bleak comedy, strong debuts by the lead child actors, and Saoirse Ronan's dramatic chops perfectly attuned to this bleakly funny role. (1/2)

Figured as much. I could see Were-Rabbit getting it before Happy Feet (possibly in Europe first before the US), though it took the film ages to even get onto Blu-Ray at all. So might be a fair old while.

Beneath the Planet of the Apes (★★★) – A cheap sequel made for fast studio money with many choices typical of such films, yet also a passionate, demented showcase of pulp sci-fi nihilism. Limited appeal if one doesn't like weird sci-fi, but worth a watch within that. (1/2)

Not to say there aren’t character aspects the anime improved from the manga, but when you watch and compare as an adult, the adaption and expansion process can feel rather… passionless as an adult sometimes.

The Mai storyline is merely one of the most severe “expand on but miss what made the original work” examples. Can’t even blame the Dub for changing it to straightforward brainwashing (albeit by letting the Orichalcos into her heart) over the original’s “merely enhance your existing darkness” angle.

tolerated Joey but robbed him of key bits, seemed to loathe Yami Bakura (mucked up motivation and introduction, never see regular Bakura being friends with the gang), find Weevil and Rex to be funny punching bags, and really love Tristan/Duke perming on Serenity.

There’s quite a few instances of the anime writers having their own preferences for who they felt like expanding on off the manga. In most cases they depended to dilute the original characters/arcs. They loved Kaiba so kept giving him stuff (including reusing Mokuba as a motivator when needs be),

Mai is still Japanese and lives in Japan, even if we don’t know where. Though you’re otherwise right on her probably feeling too separate from their group to socialise out of tournaments.

I member the first time I saw a post comparing what we think photographing the Mona Lisa is like (great view) versus the reality (people fit to bursting in the area). Followed by a similar pair of photos for the Great Wall of China. Films and TV, making them out to be vacant, they lied, they lied! 🫠

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (★★★1/2) – Feels almost like the platonic ideal of a short film/webseries where so mani disparate elements come together. Locked-in cast, calibrated corny songs and the right humour make it a great time capsule of early internet videos. (1/2)

Quite an underrated game – unlike Puzzle League on N64, the Pokémon skin was built in from the ground up. Has lots of modes, well-balanced escalating difficulty, and gorgeous sprite work (plus music). Honestly still one of the best ways to play Panel de Pon!

Whisper of the Heart (★★★★) – A seemingly unassuming teen coming-of-life story given remarkable heft in both the screenplay and the direction, with the Ghibli touch leading to a smug, intimate honestly. The "Country Roads" song runner especially works amazingly. (1/2)

Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom (★★★) – Feels like a Shaun half-hour tv special expanded to 73 mins, not just in plotting but the way the thing's filmed and shot, plus visual refinement of the gags. Diverting and amusing, even pleasurable, but disappointing. (1/2)

Fantastic Mr. Fox (★★★★) – This brand of low-fi stop-motion is a great fit for Wes Anderson's aesthetic, as is the dark-but-whimsical tone of Dahl's story. Easy to see why it's the rare Anderson film that works even for those largely not on his wavelength. (1/2)

There is an argument to be made for the CG films, bit subjective. Not so much the 2D Disney films, which is pure (if accidental) historical revisionism. Article’s also a fascinating deep dive into adjusting your product for the display, and that it should be respected and preserved with time.

And so the bridge from Forgotten Land's obstacle course 3D to freeform open-world is complete. Some may bemoan yet another series jumping onto the bandwagon, but HAL's earned the confidence to knock this out of the park. And that's despite *decades* of sticking to 2D.

The End of Oak Street (★★★1/2) – A pretty grand adventure-horror that uses dinos purely as monsters and is all the better for it, nestled inside an efficient 80 pastiche that acquits itself with strong lead performances. Plus a gnarly, weird streak that serves it well. (1/2)

Kiki’s Delivery Service (★★★★) – It glides off me a little, lacking the urgency or deep personal drive empowering Miyazaki's prior works. But it's still beautiful, mature, wise about childhood ending, and tells its conventional coming-of-age story wonderfully. (1/2)

Jesus. I’ve sometimes considered this, but the hefty price of many of the nearly 30 I don’t own – plus upgrading to CiB from loose card for 10 others – has really dissuaded me. Fair play for your decade-plus of perseverance in achieving this, Skul!

Very true. Had it been released years ago as planned, it would have been seen by die-hards and quietly forgotten. Though given the distributor paid $50m for the pic, even with this opening, it’ll still lose money (they sold foreign for $20m, so they’d need a $60m+ gross in the US to be profitable).

I appreciate the extra perspective and meeting each episode on its own terms. Though it probably helps you come to the show for different things than most adult fans! Still, any particular worries or discomfort with this era of the show, now you’re almost halfway through Johto? (2/2)

Ghost Mike (Cartoon Karma) @cartoonkarma.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Your sentiments on Johto have stayed pretty positive through to the era’s middle (most nowadays think it starts off still pretty solid but gets really sluggish by Season 4 – a 4Kids thing, but basically starting from after Satoshi’s 3rd badge). (1/2)

A fav of mine too. They’ve used this “cute wild Pokémon uses its looks to swindle our heroes” premise a few times since (that late Sinnoh-era episode with a crazy Togepi), but not too much, and I think this one has high energy and snappy comic timing for a Johto episode too.

Given all that, small wonder fans don’t remember little but telling moments of characterisation like this. If it ain’t “big enough” to be in the character’s Bulbapedia bio, most won’t remember it. I don’t agree with that sentiment myself, but I understand how it came to be. (4/4)

4. Now 4Kids was dubbing other shows, their tendencies got magnified (e.g. kept half as much music as before, swapping tracks far more frequently, etc.) 5. With that dub put-off, that this era of the anime only got fully subbed quite recently contributed to it being ignored for some time. (3/4)
100 1
Ghost Mike (Cartoon Karma) @cartoonkarma.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
2. Johto was when many drifted off watching as kids. When returning as an adult, that makes it prime to skip, and thus only remember what put one off it, not the strengths. 3. Filler episodes without Kanto-style craziness don’t tend to be remembered by most. This one qualifies! But most don’t. (2/4)
110 1
Ghost Mike (Cartoon Karma) @cartoonkarma.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
I do think people thinking this is for the same reasons as Johto itself often being underrated: 1. Most adult fans want more focused arcs and an emphasis on battle strategy. Not yet in the show’s toolkit here. (1/4)
