Beneath the Planet of the Apes (★★★) – A cheap sequel made for fast studio money with many choices typical of such films, yet also a passionate, demented showcase of pulp sci-fi nihilism. Limited appeal if one doesn't like weird sci-fi, but worth a watch within that. (1/2)

Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (★★★1/2) – Feels almost like the platonic ideal of a short film/webseries where so mani disparate elements come together. Locked-in cast, calibrated corny songs and the right humour make it a great time capsule of early internet videos. (1/2)

Quite an underrated game – unlike Puzzle League on N64, the Pokémon skin was built in from the ground up. Has lots of modes, well-balanced escalating difficulty, and gorgeous sprite work (plus music). Honestly still one of the best ways to play Panel de Pon!

Whisper of the Heart (★★★★) – A seemingly unassuming teen coming-of-life story given remarkable heft in both the screenplay and the direction, with the Ghibli touch leading to a smug, intimate honestly. The "Country Roads" song runner especially works amazingly. (1/2)

Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom (★★★) – Feels like a Shaun half-hour tv special expanded to 73 mins, not just in plotting but the way the thing's filmed and shot, plus visual refinement of the gags. Diverting and amusing, even pleasurable, but disappointing. (1/2)

Fantastic Mr. Fox (★★★★) – This brand of low-fi stop-motion is a great fit for Wes Anderson's aesthetic, as is the dark-but-whimsical tone of Dahl's story. Easy to see why it's the rare Anderson film that works even for those largely not on his wavelength. (1/2)

There is an argument to be made for the CG films, bit subjective. Not so much the 2D Disney films, which is pure (if accidental) historical revisionism. Article’s also a fascinating deep dive into adjusting your product for the display, and that it should be respected and preserved with time.

And so the bridge from Forgotten Land's obstacle course 3D to freeform open-world is complete. Some may bemoan yet another series jumping onto the bandwagon, but HAL's earned the confidence to knock this out of the park. And that's despite *decades* of sticking to 2D.

The End of Oak Street (★★★1/2) – A pretty grand adventure-horror that uses dinos purely as monsters and is all the better for it, nestled inside an efficient 80 pastiche that acquits itself with strong lead performances. Plus a gnarly, weird streak that serves it well. (1/2)

Kiki’s Delivery Service (★★★★) – It glides off me a little, lacking the urgency or deep personal drive empowering Miyazaki's prior works. But it's still beautiful, mature, wise about childhood ending, and tells its conventional coming-of-age story wonderfully. (1/2)

Alice in Wonderland (★★★1/2) – More exhausting than I remember, and not always for the better, but absolutely one of the peaks of colour and design and cel animation's unreal fluidity in all of Disney. If I admire it more than I enjoy it, I admire it a lot. (1/2)

How does this happen in the same week as two other legends? I barely watched Transformers as a kid, but even seeing Optimus’ death scene from the ‘86 movie… man, Cullen acted Prime so well. No wonder he (robot and actor) were so beloved. Also Eeyore in Winnie the Pooh for many years. R.I.P.

Coyote Vs. Acme (★★★) – Ignoring its long burial and miraculous rescue, it's a well-executed version of a dubious concept. Not totally free of modern family comedy tendencies, nor some lazy choices for these characters. But beyond the iffy animation, mostly successful. (1/2)

Ngl, I totally forgot this was a thing he was working on. But Gagne is a wizard of digital 2D animation VFX (a specific but valuable niche), and to judge from this, he’s produced a gorgeous feature. And all by himself! Totally one to bookmark.

While not as associated with her kid voice role as Dot in A Bug’s Life as Daveigh Chase was with Lilo, that’s how I’ll always know her. Unbelievable to lose two foundational child animation movie performances so young and so close to each other. R.I.P.

The Odyssey (★★★★) – Easy to nitpick, in regard to the source material and for some of Nolan's tendencies. But also easy to undervalue: this has all the goods as a transporting fantasy epic, anchored by a strong dramatic arc of guilt, delivering everything it wants to. (1/2)

Toy Story 5 (★★★) – Making Jessie the lead mostly works. Almost every other character new and old is perfunctory, though the human child characters are possibly the best-executed in the series. The "toys vs tech" plot line is occasionally inspired, but mostly rote.

Tex Avery is the GOAT. What makes this bit so funny is that it's not just aimed at one particular series, but instead mocking the cutesy trend that was started by Disney and imitated by several studios trying to ape off their success by directly copying them (including MGM itself).

Cars (★★★1/2) – Certainly Pixar's weakest of their Golden Age (their first 11), and little reaches their typical resonance beyond Doc Hudson. But the nostalgia for American small towns and the Southwest serves it very well, as does the commitment to slowing down and appreciating life. (1/2)

Shrek (★★) – Never a favourite as a kid, and even worse now: the humour is nasty, cynical and crude, the emotions are tinny and cheap, and it's among the worst-looking big-budget studio CG features. Dispiriting that this set the template for animated features for ages. (1/2)

Surf’s Up (★★★1/2) – That rare thing, a 2000s non-Pixar CG cartoon that holds up. The mockumentry conceit is applied really well, and while the script is predictable and simple, it is smart and has enough wit to make the shaggy approach work. Decent visuals to boot too. (1/2)

FernGully: The Last Rainforest (★★1/2) – Very admirable as an achingly earnest and technically audacious semi-expensive indie feature going against Disney at their peak. Outside of the villain and the more grave third act, though, it's mostly clunky 80s animated fare. (1/2)

Kids will watch anything. It's all about giving them options and then actually watching things with them. B&W, silent, any genre... they'll try it all. But if you only feed them new Hollywood product, don't be surprised if that's all they crave. It's your fault for only feeding them McDonald's.

The Road to El Dorado (★★★) – In many ways, a less successful version of Emperor's New Groove, caught between genial comedy and its dramedy production roots, in visual approach as well as tone. Zippy performances and a pleasant comic script make it go down fine enough.
