for a time in early 20th century north america, if group singing with a pipe organ in a church wasn’t your thing, you could group sing in a movie theatre with pipe organ, or a civic auditorium with a pipe organ, or a lodge hall with a pipe organ, or

(3/3) can’t emphasize enough that she was the *only one* playing in this hot (chicago!!) style who made it to record- look up her husband’s recordings to see what I mean lol. and it’s an actual miracle these transcription discs survived, they’re the best example of her whole deal. HBD Helen!!

Helen is still known for her “backwards dresses” but with a little more info the whole story feels a bit sad…
newspaper article. text reads: Mrs. Jesse Crawford Says She Is Backward When It Comes to Music.
Mrs. Jesse Crawford of the famous Broadway movie organist team of Crawford and Crawford explained yesterday that life was just a series of reverses for her.
"My gowns look as if they were made backwards. "she said. "That's because
all the decorations are on the back instead
of the front. I do that so the audience will see them as I play."
Mrs. Crawford prefers to be known as an accomplished organist rather than as a stunning dresser. That's why she wears simple dresses.
"It's good psychology,” said the musician.
"Now if I wore a lot of stunning dresses the women in the audience would think I was just sitting up there in front of the organ trying to show off. They would think my husband was doing all the playing. So I put all the decorations where the audience can see them, and give all my attention to the organ."
