Chapter 35: Abolitionists in Brazil pivoted to an active campaign of open civil disobedience, such as helping slaves to run away and form new quilombos, like the one in Leblon, or to go to the free provinces that had abolished slavery. Many enslaved people did not need encouragement—they were already fleeing, or demanding pay for their work, or rebelling on estates.A photo of a long sweep of Copacabana beach, in Rio de Janeiro, taken from a rooftop, showing the curve of the coastline. Detail of a street mural of the quilombo, or self-emancipated community of former slaves, in Leblon, Brazil.
