Interesting piece explaining why inheritance tax concerns many more people than the percentage of the estates paying it would suggest.

Self-employed traders currently pay income #tax in January & July, mostly after profits have been banked. HMRC wants to accelerate those tax payments to 4 times per year, and based on estimated figures. Please respond to this consultation - closing date is 4 August. www.gov.uk/government/c...

Pension scams: Britons warned over criminals offering inheritance tax loopholes
Fraudsters exploit confusion or anxiety over new IHT rules by offering a ‘safe haven’ for savings pots The caller pitches a great deal. Shift the moneysaved in your pension and reinvest it in a scheme overseas where you can avoid it being caught under next year’s changes to the UK’s inheritance tax (IHT) system. From April next year, any money left in a defined contribution pension after your death, which is most workplace and all private pensions, will be pulled into the IHT net. Continue reading...

This is one of the most brilliant (and beautifully written) analyses of the dissolution and future of the UK's party system you will ever read. @prospectmagazine.co.uk is free to read at the moment, so I'd urge any of you with an interest in British politics to get hold of it as soon as you can.

70% of the additional spending from removing the two-child limit will go to families who are in work. This is targeting support for low-income working households who are being priced out of a decent standard of living despite doing everything asked of them.

Money Box wants to hear from people who’ve had letters asking for Simple Assessment payments. HMRC has sent some savers 2 letters - one earlier this year & one now that includes tax on savings. If you’re one of those people - please email felicity.hannah@bbc.co.uk and thanks a lot in advance.

It's shocking how much consensus there is amongst tax policy wonks and economists of Left and Right on the tax reforms the UK needs to boost growth & make the tax system fairer More shocking: they're reforms that are never mentioned by any politicians buff.ly/rTfNmFC

Stop talking about wealth taxes — make these reforms instead
Any sane discussion of changes that both right and left could agree on is being crowded out by tax populism

So what was the tax scheme that bankrupted Frankie Dettori, and who is the unnamed adviser who sold it to him? And why should we feel (slightly) sorry for Dettori? Quick thread.

This is causing so much confusion. As @paullewismoney.bsky.social says it is a change to the requirement to file a tax return, the trading allowance (amount you can earn tax free) remains at £1k. The timing depends on when HMRC can built a reporting service into its app/personal tax account.

#Savers!! Updated guidance from HMRC today. If you have tax on #interest for 2023/24 tax year (and are not in self-assessment) - it could take until 31 March 2025 for #HMRC to get a tax computation out to you www.gov.uk/apply-tax-fr...

You do not pay tax on your savings interest if you're on a low income.

Why no posts today? I have been struggling, grappling, wrestling with my self-assessment form! I am one of the luckless 500,000 self-employed who must account for more than one year of profits in 2023/24 - in my case 23 months. And it has been turning my brain inside out.

Let’s talk about Direct File. It’s a free, easy way for people to file their taxes directly online with IRS. You keep your tax refund — rather than paying $150 to a sleazy tax prep company. It’s more efficient! But these Republicans want you to keep wasting money on TurboTax.
