6. “love note from my guardian angel” by @carolinehung.bsky.social in @speccolorwaysverse.bsky.social An extraordinary poem that blends erasure, haibun, and prose poetry into a delicious, vivid concoction. Dark and bloody and weird, unafraid of itself. I loved every syllable.

my weird horror short "Ticket po mamser" is in this year's BRAVE NEW WEIRD anthology 🖤 and of course, shoutout to @strangehorizons.bsky.social for being the first to champion this story in their 10/2/25 issue store.tenebrouspress.com/products/bra... (2/3)
"Ticket po mamser." is a weird horror short that I based off an old nightmare of mine. Now it is immortalized in both digital and print editions. The title sounds weird, but it is meant to be a small nod to the story's airport setting. While writing, I was thinking specifically of the Manila Airport. Now and especially in the pre-2010s era, security guards stand at the airport entrance to check travelers for passports and e-tickets. Before smartphones, they asked to see printed copies of itineraries or plane tickets. "Ticket po mamser" is one of many ways to say it in polite Tagalog. I used the word 'mamser' as it is a uniquely Filipino portmanteau combining Ma'am and Sir. Security guards and hospitality workers may say it for convenience. Mamser or mamsir could be plural and gender-inclusive too.

But why is airport security even asking to see tickets and passports? Right at the doorstep, at that?In 2024, the Philippine Statistics Authority counted 2.19 million migrant Filipino workers scattered far across continents. Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, USA, Germany, and more... Over half of these migrant workers are women with domestic jobs such as cleaning and child-rearing, among many other types of hard labor. Since the 1990s, the Philippine economy has relied on the backs of Overseas Filipino Workers. Their money remittances account for around 9-10% of the country's GDP. In the Philippines, a woman with a nursing degree might earn a monthly salary of roughly 500 US Dollars. She earns a lot more working overseas, far away from home. Often, her salary has to cover healthcare for aging parents, tuition fees for younger siblings, rent and all the daily necessities for the whole family. This is a stereotypical situation amongst OFWs.

There is something of a "farewell ritual" that happens outside the automatic doors of the Manila Airport. Every year, millions of Filipinos with jobs abroad have to exchange painful goodbyes with their loved ones. And Filipino culture is big on family. Some people make jokes about a whole barangay (village) traveling hours from the province to the airport, just to send off a single person. As silly as they sound, these jokes, and stereotypes, and exaggerated scenarios--they're all part of a sad reality.

Airport security has to do crowd control somehow. So that is the explanation behind the title, "Ticket po mamser." It is not an OFW story (not this time), just a weirdly specific and nightmarish image of the Manila Airport. You will have to read to see the whole picture. I still remember writing it back in 2024 over a span of three days, during a power outage in my old Manila neighborhood. I hid in a Bo's Coffee and nearly killed myself choking on some kind of vanilla cinnamon iced latte--super sweet, by the way. I think it was also the middle of July back then. How poetic! I'm more careful drinking cinnamon now.

just please tell me you understand kiddo #Peacetober2025 Day 10: Pots
Pots! You’re going to need three. One over your head, worn like a helmet, of course. One over your back—a big pot, preferably, so you can do like a turtle and pull your limbs in to safety. That much should about cover your bases. Why the third pot, you ask? Well, there’s no easy way to say this, kid. Better if you never need a third pot, better if you never know what to use it for. But look, you have to catch the rainwater when it falls from the skies. Just think about the rain. Only the rain.
