Last summer I was in Spain. My "deformacion profesional" made me gather examples of "wrong Spanish" displayed in public spaces: nobody cares about A used with non personal objects and even verb agreement is at risk when the subject is a collection of words. Yet my students will be penalised at GCSE.

I am using the new GCSE textbook. One of my Y10s asked me about the imperfect and the preterite. Do I show off that I am not a novice and tell him some vague words about non finished actions but not mentioning about aspect or do I give him usual contexts and examples the way linguists work?

I love the art and I love your article. In my opinion, the rules first comes from a disinformed point of view of language. Errors go with you all your life in your second language. If we start teaching L2 as translation of L1 literacy (i.e. rules first) we are disadvantaging some students.

Good luck with that! I have worked in schools that give you a centrally produced PowerPoint to ensure quality control. It also seems that Ofsted will ask middle leaders how they ensure teaching in departments is consistent... "we use the same PowerPoints".

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

I do not want to hear how he feels about me being English or not. You are discussing how to lead a country listing the rule of law amongst its defining core values; I don´t want to know how you "feel" when someone says they are English or British or European. Have you got anything useful to offer?

Leaning on the grammar pillar is not enough, and phonics and vocabulary are not much help either. Neither is translation, particularly with students who are developing their literacy in their own language. Pinker studied how natives use verbs: not via conjugation, but domains of fluency.

The Spanish imperfect is my favourite example of the paradox: translated as I used to do, I was doing, I would do.... explaining that it is an incomplete action in the past is not much help in Y9. In Spanish we can often choose between imperfect or preterite depending on meaning we want to convey.

We might not be in this pickle is the supporters of the pillars had considered interlanguage and the interlanguage paradox. And you would not have experts delivering training saying that they if only they had learned the phonics of W in school they would not have a foreign accent now.

Maybe that is how he kept his beauty. My dad did not like chicken much and would complain that it was full of hombronas. He only started talking about hombronas when I started studying philology and history of the Spanish language. Or maybe chickens were not injected with hormones before.

I teach languages. When I started teaching there was a comedy show whose catchphrase was "scorchio" Ofsted was pro creativity and fast moving up Bloom's pyramid, which caused many scorchios. Now it is grammar, causing big mistakes and no meaning. All evidence-based.

You cannot escape interlanguage, even with the rules first, avoid mistakes approach. I have just read Pearson's materials to train on phonics and dictation and it advises to focus on the difficult sounds. Which are difficult because of non-nativeness, also called interlanguage. Mi/me, still there.

After each new book we plan from scratch, for no reason but editorial says so. Six years at university so that I can play Onda's grammar videos rather use what always worked for me. Conjugate and infinitive are mentioned but not explained or exemplified. Not worth throwing the baby out or the water.

From studying his business activities, it looks more likely that he is a large net destroyer of UK jobs. Kuenssberg is drooling all over him but like many of our credulous 'journalists', she doesn't bother to dig deep and suffers from total amnesia.

My school bought the audio from Pearson. They were baffled, "because it is already in the ebook", but my Internet connexion is pretty unreliable and I do not want to be fidgeting with the keyboard in front of 30 teens who already think I am uncool and inept.

Commercial and bad. Why do we have to create quizlets or blooket sets for homework? Why aren't the books well planned? GCSE students would be A1 level students. Why does the textbook throw so much at them in unit 1. And why does Onda encourage students to say they are stupid?

The Spanish textbook starts with "revision" because there is no way you would throw so much information at students unless you thought they knew it beforehand. Vocabulary acquisition does not seem to be planned and we seem to expect Spanish to be learned by talking about Spanish in English.

More often than not you don´t translate it. This new approach of starting to teach Spanish as a mere translation of English is doing students - particularly those with poor literacy - no favours.

Year 7 has a new "knowledge rich" textbook that gives Soy Juan y soy tonto as a good answer to ¿Cómo eres? Very early to deal with adjective agreement, as no nouns have been introduced yet. No problem, more than half of them thought silly (alleged translation of tonto) was a noun.

Maybe we teachers are fostering this attitude without realising when we do retrieval practise? I like explaining to students why we do what we do in lessons, and I have explained the concept of interlanguage. Y7 are probably too young to get it, so I mention my foreign accent and little more.

Yes! Noticing and making sense of language, making hypothesis about how it works and checking if we are understood. This makes so much more sense for language teachers than the model of think in English and translate into the target language pillar by pillar!

Prudencia leaves before the night because otherwise children harass her, Poncia kills her husband's birds because, is unpleasant with the beggar because she can; women are declared bad just on suspicion, gossip or testimony of a dog. It is an oppressive society. And Bernarda is as blind as Oedipus.
