Growing up, home was difficult, full of coldness, silence, and a numbness I had to learn to carry.
To survive, I became colder than my surroundings. Numbness was protection. Feeling less
meant feeling less hurt. It was a quiet kind of strength, and it left me cut off from the warmth I
desperately needed.
