It's funny because I watched DS9 before TNG, and I didn't understand the Luxwana hate because in DS9 she's *the best* They were still figuring her out in TNG so it doesn't always work but god is Majel Barrett great.

guide stuff has a lot of value if done correctly, although a lot of it is low-lift content for SEO only. I'm thinking 300-word news posts that are press release regurgitation, enthusiast press, ragebait. Stuff that doesn't engage the reader critically.

I worked for Mobile nations, which was bought by Future in like 2019. We were a network of tech sites. Now there's only one left (Windows Central). If you want to talk about watching powers devalue media and me watching it happen, this is a great example.

For a while it did (I've always thought having a balance of different kinds of editorial was a good system), but AI has gutted traffic across the web. Google and Amazon basically killed commerce editorial. No strategy anymore, no money.

I talk about this shit a lot because I've been working in online media since 2009, not just games. I've seen the apparatus crumble in real time. I've watched people have anxiety attacks over clicks and wringing out their brain for $200 because content is severely undervalued by every power.

Games media is not only unhealthy because there aren't jobs. For years, games media (journalism in general, really) has run on a deeply unhealthy system that incentivized the worst kind of writing and devalued the labor of writers and other creators.

I can tell that games media is in a deeply unhealthy place when I see some of the most talented, experienced, and incisive reporters and critics in the space say they don't know how much longer they can keep on doing the work. The industry is hollowing out and the writing itself is suffering for it.

Not quite the same thing as a Metacritic bonus, but I worked at a publication once that gave us a Drudge bonus ($50) if a story we wrote got picked up by the Drudge Report. All these things do is incentivize fucked up behavior and work for all the wrong reasons.

Yeah that's an idea I get stuck on. Twice or once a year, get a best-of catalog with extras in the mail. Needs to feel like a gift for the reader and can't be too much of a lift for the publication.

This is why I do think physical still has a place, even if it has to be much smaller scale than something like a monthly subscription. Algorithms are too pervasive and have done too much damage to journalism, so it feels like the right time to start experimenting.

Talking about the future of journalism today and while nobody has the answer to this, it's going to come down to publications figuring out how to get around algorithms and just give people the good stuff. That might mean physical! Or newsletters! Or in-person events! Or carrier pigeon, idk!
