Report: Big Food companies regularly sue to stop or slow down public health policies
Companies such as Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and Mars have regularly sued governments around the world in an effort to prevent public health proposals from being implemented, according to new reporting by Lighthouse Reports and a slew of media partners. Diets full of ultraprocessed foods — such as fast food, cereals, soft drinks and protein bars — have been linked to poor health outcomes. Governments around the globe have responded by adding warning labels on packages and placing restrictions on marketing. To fight back, food companies have sued 239 times between 2010 and 2025, according to Lighthouse Reports’ investigation. The analysis examined lawsuits in six countries, including the U.S., Britain and India. Most of the lawsuits focused on food products’ labels, which detail the ingredients and nutritional value. There wouldn’t be a slew of lawsuits if labeling wasn’t effective, a public health expert at New York University told The Guardian. “The lawsuits tell us that public health measures reduce sales of unhealthful products,” she said. The vast majority of lawsuits were filed in Mexico, where many of the country’s children and adolescents are considered overweight. After the country instituted a labeling requirement for soft drinks, a local company that bottled Pepsi sued,...

Special journal issue highlights precision prevention in cancer epidemiology
Cancer epidemiology is not merely about counting cases; it is a dynamic field that informs screening policies, resource allocation, and clinical trial design. With rapid changes in risk factor profiles and healthcare access across regions, timely and granular epidemiological evidence is more critical than ever. Yet translating these data into actionable insights requires robust analytical frameworks, cross‑national comparisons, and integration with behavioral and socioeconomic factors. This special issue addresses these needs by presenting studies that span multiple continents, leverage large cohort and registry data, and project future burden under current trends. The special issue (DOI: https://www.cancerbiomed.org/content/23/7) of Cancer Biology & Medicine on Cancer Epidemiology published latest research and viewpoints from leading epidemiologists. Its content includes cancer risk stratification, early detection, the interplay between mental health and cancer, etc. The issue's epidemiological contributions cover both global and regional perspectives. An editorial opens the discussion on multi‑cancer early detection (MCED), moving from promise to practice and identifying the next frontier in screening. A comprehensive review on ovarian cancer patterns, trends, and risk factors sets the stage for the original studies that follow. One large cross‑sectional analysis from a population screening project uncovers the mediating role of mental health in the association between...

Melting of Greenland ice sheet could release large stores of methane
Meltwater flushed frozen methane hydrates out of the sediment at the edge of the Greenland ice sheet after the last glacial maximum, raising fears that melting glaciers could soon release huge amounts of this planet-warming gas. Methane hydrates form when gas molecules are trapped in a cage of water molecules, freezing into an ice-like substance. They are sometimes called “fire ice” because they can burn despite being 85 per cent water. They form under the high pressure and low temperature found in sediments beneath the ocean, permafrost or glaciers. Some estimates suggest methane hydrates contain twice as much carbon as all coal, oil and conventional gas on Earth. But global warming is disrupting some of the cold, pressurised conditions in which methane hydrates exist. For example, some scientists think a mysterious 50-metre-deep crater discovered in the Russian Arctic in 2014 was caused when permafrost thaw suddenly relieved the pressure on a methane hydrate. This would have released it in a “violent physical explosion”, wrote the authors of a 2024 study. Now, researchers in Greenland have found that flows of glacial meltwater can also unleash methane hydrates. “We found a new way of releasing methane that we thought was in the...

KFF Poll Finds That Most Adults Lack Confidence in Key Health Agencies to Act Independently - The Monitor
A peer-reviewed study published in Vaccine found that among study participants, the type of media people consumed was associated with their attitudes toward the MMR vaccine, even after accounting for political identity and other demographic factors. Researchers assigned 22 media outlets to five categories, using data on media usage from Pew Research Center and AllSides Media, and selected one representative outlet from each category. Those who frequently engaged with “new” or primarily digital right-leaning media, like Breitbart, were about twice as likely to say that the risks of the MMR vaccine outweighed the benefits, compared to those who never did. Even infrequent engagement with such outlets was associated with elevated odds. At the same time, engagement with “legacy” right-leaning media, like Fox News, was not significantly associated with MMR vaccine hesitancy among participants. What To Watch Out For: The information environment in which people consume news may shape vaccine attitudes, even within political identity. As health communicators work to increase vaccine confidence, understanding how differences in media consumption shape attitudes may help predict what populations are more likely to encounter and be influenced by misleading claims about vaccine safety. Some Pregnant People Are Choosing to Deliver Without Medical Support, and...

Are Democrats trying to out-hawk Trump on China to spite him?
If you ask Sen. Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), President Donald Trump’s trip to China is nothing short of disastrous. “He wants that deal so bad that he can taste it,” Slotkin warned this week at a Politico event. “The guy is about to give away the farm.” And Slotkin is not alone. As Trump meets today with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Democrats have largely coalesced around a message of opposition to the summit. “Beijing is trying to create a more aggressive, coercive, and lawless international landscape that harms the American people,” argued Sen. Chris Coons (D-Del.), adding that Trump should “remember who Xi Jinping” is before signing any deals. So it is that, even as Democrats undergo a painful reconsideration of their approach to Israel, the party still appears unwilling to break with the Biden administration’s hawkish line on China. Many progressive China analysts fear that Democrats are missing an opportunity to pursue a more diplomatic approach to Washington’s most consequential rivalry. Trump is, by their lights, a deeply flawed messenger. But his desire to meet with Chinese leadership and seek detente in the U.S.-China relationship should be embraced, they argue. “By virtue of his iconoclastic views, he has created political...
