🧪 Mediterranean ecosystems are changing fast & in dynamic, interconnected ways, but we rarely look at the interconnections. Doñana National Park is a great example of how multiple global-change drivers ripple through ecosystems via species interactions, trophic cascades, and habitat change. 🌍🧩

How many chromosomes can an animal have? In our paper out now in @currentbiology.bsky.social we show that the Atlas blue butterfly has 229 chromosome pairs- the highest in diploid Metazoa! These arose by rapid autosome fragmentation while sex chromosomes stayed intact. www.cell.com/current-biol...

And the heat will only get worse. In Spain we have been experiencing anomalies of 5-10 degrees in June. Birds are falling from their nests. My 10-year-old daughter told me last night that she was so sorry for all the animals suffering due to humanity's fault. It is heart-breaking.

Manifestación en Madrid para que se vuelva a proteger al lobo ibérico en toda España. Desde 2021 el lobo estaba protegido en todo el país, pero en marzo se volvió a la situación anterior con una excusa estúpida en la ley de desperdicio alimentario.

About 15-20 yrs ago, a bunch of reviews (inc. 1 by me) made predictions about the future of genomics in conservation. 1 yr ago at ICISB, Robin Waples assessed which of those predictions had been fulfilled.
