As explored before, I’m quite intrigued by faces in life drawings - particularly the shorthand required in capturing a face during briefer poses. Gaia's been modelling for Sunday Life Drawing since I restarted sessions after lockdown. Here’s a selection of details of pictures in charcoal and oil.

Found another box of old pictures, including this cheery little self-portrait from about fifteen years ago. (Poss wearing the same t-shirt).

Finished sorting through old work. Final one of these posts... Remaining pictures from side project painting literary figures for Terry Victor’s 2016 Edinburgh show ‘Well Thumbed’, which then morphed into slightly larger exhibition in Bloomsbury. #welshart #celf #portread #literature #portrait

This excavation of old panels has turned into a series! (Now number 3 of 4). Selection of unearthed pre-lockdown dancer paintings - mostly Ballet Cymru rehearsal pictures, though a few surviving first steps collaborating in the painting studio. #celf #dance #dawns #painting #ballet

Sorted through another couple of boxes, finding mostly monochrome portraits from 2011 to ‘14ish. Here’s a selection. Again, pretty patchy, but each has something I like. Mainly musicians, actors, comedians and other stage performers. #celf #portread #portraiture #oilpainting

Running low on panels, so sorting through old pictures looking for things I can paint over. Very difficult. Even the really unsuccessful ones often have some kind of value - a poor picture of a great model it’s good to remember, etc. Here’s a selection of nudes. 1997ish to 2008ish.

Fun Sunday Life Drawing over the weekend. Poses by Gaia. Pictures by Sue, Gerard, Tessa, Martin & me. (Martin inspiring me to get paints out, Kevin Sinnott inspiring me to hold brushes by the ends of handles. All a bit lively!). Next session Sept 13th with Sofia. #sundaylifedrawing #lifedrawing

@horatia.bsky.social Hi Horatia. Not sure if you’re still in here, but just found this at the bottom of an old paint box. Pretty sure it’s yours? (St Martin’s, circa 1989). Apols!

Invited to create some drawings on index cards last week, so made these little sketches of dancer Riz Golden playing in/on webbing. A fun exercise that helped give me a feel for coming series of paintings.

One of the lovely things about my recent show at MOMA Cymru was to have my work in close proximity to that of Bill Henderson and Kevin Sinnott - both teachers at St Martin’s School of Art when I was there from 1988 to ‘92. These two large canvases were hanging in the space adjacent to my exhibition.

Had a fine time with the Radio Wales Arts Show last week, talking about my MOMA Machynlleth exhibition, Portraits and Dance. (The last time I did a radio interview was in around 2010, and on the subject of UK drugs policy. This occasion was much more fun). www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

Precarious poses have been a recurring theme in my work for about ten years - recently with more focus. Here are Angharad, Indigo and Isaac, variously poised, cooly finding their balance. Portraits and Dance opens at MOMA Machynlleth on March 28th, and runs until May 9th. #celf #dance #dawns
