For comparison: the first photo shows them in the order I posted them. The second shows them in (more or less) order of thickness: 512, 517, 516, 515, 513, D, S. The last one shows off how much room I made in my yarn cabinet! I finished off 3 cones+3 tubes of […] [Original post on ohai.social]
All the towels folded and hanging so you can see them side by side. From a distance the stripes on 515 and the single diagonal are more noticeable than they are up close. The towels are folded into quarters and stacked so that the thick edge is in view. They mostly, but maybe not perfectly, go from the thinnest to thickest from top to bottom. The bottom one is ridiculously thick and the second from bottom is pretty ridiculous too.3 empty cones and 3 empty tubes, all of which previously would have held weaving yarn. There are some small scraps of dark pink, light pink and white yarn.

Also not numbered, this is the single plain diagonal. This is the most wacky of the lot and totally not practical, but if you like your tea towels more like an art piece, than this draft is for you! Shrinkage was 45% in width and 32% in length. @weaving @fiberarts #weaving #FiberArts #textiles 7/
Close up of weaving on the loom. The fabric looks like it has been put through a waffle iron. There are rows of pink, white and very pale pink stripes. Each stripe is a row of waffle cells. Each cell is outlined in a single dark red thread. There is a small dot from the brown yarn at the bottom of each cell.Weaving after washing photographed so you can see the cells which are comically deep. You can see by the undulations of the towel itself how thick these cells end up making the fabric. Front and back of the weaving after washing. On the front, the red single threads dominate. The warp stripes are barely visible. On the back, the brown single threads dominate. Each cell, front and back, is all just wiggly jiggly.

This is the double plain diagonal tie-down. Strickler did not give it a draft number. It is most similar to 513, but the cells are deeper and the resulting fabric is deeper. We are also getting more shrinkage here. Shrinkage was 39% in width and 31% in length […] [Original post on ohai.social]
Close up of weaving on the loom. A dark pink stripe is flanked by a white and a pale pink stripe. The pink stripe looks like a column of Xs that are made with double lines. The Xs are in the white and light pink stripe but you can’t really see them.Photo after washing to show the depth of the cells which is significant. The brown single thread at the bottom barely shows and just looks like a shadow at the bottom.view of most of the towel after washing looking straight down. The waffle section of the towel has shrunk considerably compared to the basket weave hem at the bottom, so hem is ruffled out.view of front and back of piece after washing. The cells are very deep and the insides of the cells are steep going down. The front is dominated by the single red threads that divide the stripes, although you can see the stripes between. But the stripes are smushed together due to shrinkage, so they are not as prominent as in most of the previous towels. There is a section on the front that has red outline threads in the weft. The brown threads can barely be seen on the front in the center of each cell. On the back, the cells look more like an egg carton in the depressions are more rounded. The brown single threads show at the top of the ridge lines and undulate up and down.

515-Visually, this is very different from the previous ones. The white weft really dominates the look and the warp stripes are much less noticeable. This one used all 16 of my treadles. @weaving @fiberarts #weaving #FiberArts #textiles 5/
Photo of weaving on the loom showing a waffle weave in progress. Each row ow cells is shifted over a bit from the one below like a wall of bricks. Some rows are outlined in red or brown like the warp outline that show in that row. The warp is striped dusty rose, pale pink and white with single threads of red to separate each stripe and a single thread of brown down the center of each stripe.Photo of weaving after washing to show the depth of the cells are are quite shallow. The vertical stripes are barely noticeable in this one. We do see the section that is outlined in red and brown and looks like rows of bricks. The red and brown single threads only pop out on alternating rows. The rows with the red threads show the cells as the one color of the vertical stripe, but the rows with the brown threads show each cell as half of one colored stripe and half of another.Front and back of the piece after washing. The front part shows the section that looks like red and brown stacked bricks that includes red and brown weft outlines. We can also see a bit that does not have those colored weft stripes and just has white weft. In the white section, it is easy to visually loose the cells and just see the vertical red and brown threads. On the back, we notice the vertical stripes a bit more. Both red and brown single threads can be seen. The weft edges of the cells are like waves of raised white ridges.

The raised floats increase and decrease in a way that makes the look almost circular.photo of weaving after washing to show the depth of the cells which are small and somewhat shallow.Front and back of the piece after washing. The red floats are not so long, but still show definition on the front. On the back they can be seen as little red dots in the corners of each cell. On the front, the brown center line is visible and draws the eye into the center of each cell making them appear deeper. On the back, the brown runs down the ridge of each stripe.

516-This one ended up looking and feeling more like seersucker. One thing to note is that in the draft, Strickler calls for 2 adjacent threads on shaft 1. Since my shaft 1 (red) threads were thicker than the pinks and white, I just went with that. (the brown […] [Original post on ohai.social]
Close up of weaving on the loom. The structure shows somewhat of a waffle. It is more like a box within a box, with the outsides of the boxes being raised threads in both warp and weft. The colors are dusty rose pink, pale pink and white warp stripes. There is a weft section that is white and one that is dusty rose.photo of weaving to show the depth of the cells which are soft and undulating and only moderately deep.photo showing front and back of the piece. The front shows the colored stripes with the red single thread outline between them. On the front, the single red thread that separates the stripes is raised and the cells dip down to the brown thread at the center which can be seen as a series of dots. On the back, the red cannot be seen, and the brown line is raised. On back and front, the weft ridges look like a series of small waves.

513-The cells got quite deep on this one. The floats at the edge of the cells are long and will probably catch with use, but this will still make a great dish towel. @weaving @fiberarts #weaving #FiberArts #textiles
Photo of weaving on the loom. The pattern is dusty rose pink, white and pale pink stripes. There is a single thread of dark red in between each stripe that is somewhat raised from the rest. And a single light brown thread down the middle of each stripe. The structure is best seen in the darker pink stripe where it looks like a double Xsame weaving photographed to show the depth of the cells. The cells that are directly in view look like inverted cones. The red outlines of the cells are loose and floaty.photo showing front and back of weaving. The front shows the stripes as rows of cells with red loose yarns defining the stripes. The cells are deep, you can see the color of the rows and the single thread of brown at the bottom that pulls the eye to emphasize the depth. The back of the piece shows the cell coming down with little indentations the look like a pencil eraser was poked into the fabric to make small indentations running down in rows between the colored stripes. The red threads are not visible, but you can see the brown threads, especially in the white an pale pink stripes. The brown blends into the darker pink stripes and is less prominent.

Here's a little🧵before/after photos of the waffle weave project. All drafts come from Strickler's 8-shaft pattern book, so the numbers of the drafts refers to that, in case you are interested. The first is 512. The depth of the cells was among the smallest of […] [Original post on ohai.social]
Photo of weaving on the loom. It is stripes of dusty rose, pale pink and white, with single yarns of red between each stripe and a single yarn of light brown in the middle of each stripe. The structure is most noticeable in the darker pink stripe in which you can see each cell as a white diamond surrounded by a single outline of white tie downs. Same weaving after washing. It is photographed so you can see the depth of the cells. The edges of the cells pop up a bit, but the cells themselves are somewhat shallow. Front and back of the weaving. On the front the cells look small. They are outlined in red with the interiors looking somewhat rounded making them look like small rose buds. On the back, the color is more spread out into 4 cells making them appear as larger broader flowers. The red outline does not show at all on the back, but you can see a bit more of the brown that defines the center of the cells.

Reading Empires of the Silk Road by Christopher Beckwith and I found this particularly interesting. #TIL

THE WAR CHARIOT
A very light two-wheeled wagon normally drawn by two horses and ridden
by a driver and an archer, the chariot is the world's first complex machine,
and at the same time the first technologically advanced weapon. A true
chariot is so light that an empty one can be lifted with one hand, and its
wheels are so delicate that the chariot cannot be left standing for long. It
has to be placed on a raised axle-rest when not in use to avoid deformation
of the rims, or else the wheels need to be removed and stored separately
from the body. It cannot be used to haul anything heavy or bulky. It can
hold two men at most, and can barely hold those two-in all cases one
must be the driver, and in nearly all historical cases the other person was
an archer. Chariots thus had no practical use other than warfare, hunting,
and, eventually, parades.

I highlighted the bit about how light it was and how delicate the wheels were.

Sad to report that @KarenStrickholm has died. It was 2 months ago, but I just found out. I found her FB page and saw her relatives’ posts.
Kellie Kay
I have some sad news to report. My sister in law, Karen Strickholm passed away last night in an Albuquerque, NM hospital. Karen has had major health challenges and had a heart attack recently. It was all just too much for her to recover from.
She had so many friends and supporters across the country, we thought this was the best way to get this information out.
There will be a virtual memorial service, date & time TBD. I will post a link once it’s finalized.
Please keep her family in your prayers, especially her Mom, Jean Strickholm.

Jean Strickholm
Sadly Karen passed away April 6 at about 8:45 PM. She was sedated and not in pain. Sazi Mari was with her comforting her. I was with her on Facebook Time.
