A terracotta figurine of a dog standing on four legs, holding a small animal in its mouth. The dog has a slender body, pointed ears, and a slightly curved tail. The surface of the sculpture is rough and textured, with patches of white primer. The small animal in the dog's mouth appears to be another quadruped, possibly a hare or a smaller dog. The sculpture is displayed on a white surface against a neutral beige background.

The so-called ‘Sappho’ fresco from #Pompeii A beautiful Roman painting of a woman holding a writing tablet, with a stylus pen raised to her lips in thoughtful contemplation, 1st century AD. Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples 📷 by me #FrescoFriday #Archaeology
My photo shows a reproduction of the so-called Sappho Fresco, which is a famous Roman fresco from Pompeii. The original was on loan when I visited the Museo Arqueologico di Napoli. The portrait-style painting depicts a wealthy young woman holding writing implements. She wears a plain green tunic with a pinkish-browny-grey mantle covering her shoulders, large gold hoop earrings, and a gold wire hairnet beneath the rim of which emerge curls of hair which frame her face. In her left hand she holds a wax writing tablet and in her right hand she holds a black iron stylus pen which she rests against her bottom lip. She gazes in thoughtful contemplation. This fresco is known as the Sappho Fresco after the Greek Poet. On display National Archaeological Museum Naples

We found some of these, though without bronze. It was a very, very odd feeling. They are beautifully made, with multi-process craftsmanship. The sclera was white marble, carefully carved and smoothed to shape, with a high polish to the surface, and the corners of the eyes delicately painted 1/

This bronze head of a griffin - once an attachment for a cauldron - was discovered to have been stolen from the museum at Olympia in the 1930s. It's been in the #MetMuseum since the 70s, and it's back in Greece for now, but part of a long-term loan to the Met. 🏺 #ancientbluesky 7th c. BCE. 📸 me
Bronze cauldrons set on tripods or conical stands were among the most spectacular votive gifts dedicated in Greek sanctuaries from the eighth to the sixth centuries B.C. Cast-bronze griffins' heads often decorated the cauldron rims; they projected outward from the shoulder of the vessel on long necks made of hammered or cast bronze. Some of the dedicated cauldrons were colossal. The Greek historian Herodotus describes one made for King Kroisos of Lydia that could hold 2,700 gallons and another dedicated on the island of Samos that was supported by huge kneeling figures. Over six hundred bronze griffins' heads from cauldrons are known today; most have been found at the sanctuary of Zeus at Olympia or at that of Hera on Samos. This enormous head is one of the finest.

The griffin has its eagle beak open, calling out, and its thin sharp tongue is curled upwards in its mouth. It also has a knob-like finial atop a stalk on top of its head and is missing one of its long upright ears. A very nice patina, part green, part orange, but mostly dark. You can see little feather patterns in the bronze if you zoom in.

To bring a smile to your face this Monday morning, here’s an ancient Egyptian sketch of a cat serving a mouse! 😄 The artist used a flake of limestone as a sketchpad for this fun scene. 📷 Brooklyn Museum www.brooklynmuseum.org/opencollecti... #Archaeology #Art
A sketch made in black ink on a limestone flake (ostracon) depicts a cat and mouse imitating human behaviour. On the right, seen in profile, a tabby cat with pointed ears stands on its hind legs serving a mouse seated on a folding stool. The cat fans the mouse, holds a piece of cloth, and offers a plucked duck. Facing the cat, the mouse is seated on a folding stool with its tail hanging over the back edge of the stool. The seemingly female mouse wears a long skirt and has a flower on her forehead. She holds a dish in her right hand, and a flower and cloth (often held by pharaohs) in her left hand. Dimensions 8.9 x 17.3 x 1.1 cm. Dated c. 1295–1075 BC. Animals imitating human behaviour are well-known in Egyptian art. Their meaning is uncertain. Perhaps a caricature or illustration to a fable, perhaps a satire of the royal family, or maybe just a sketch for fun.

At the center of the Forbidden Oreo cookie! 😮 🍪 Actually, this is a banded agate cameo depicting an unknown Ptolemaic king in a radiate crown against the giant head of Zeus Ammon (looking exactly like Herakles). Delicious! 🏺 Made in Alexandria, Egypt, 2nd c. BCE. #GettyVilla 📸 me
Carved in cameo technique is a double portrait of two heads facing left. The foreground figure in a layer of dark stone is a beardless male with corkscrew curls, and wearing what resembles a radiate crown with a laurel wreath. It recalls the spiky crown worn by Roman emperors, but the head does not readily match any known portrait. Carved behind him in a white layer is the head of a bearded male with rugged features resembling a typical depiction of Hercules. The background is the lowest layer and so dark brown that it's almost black. The gem has been drilled through lengthwise as though once suspended or mounted.

Ptolemaic Greek, made in Alexandria, Egypt, 2nd century BCE. Banded agate.
