Harry Collins write about this is "Are We All Scientific Experts Now". The "specialist expertise" of chronic disease sufferers is explicity mentioned (pg. 64 of my copy) as a form of experiental expertise, not to be discounted in relation to more formal, accredited expertise. I agree with you, too.
