My expert opinion on Second Temple Judaism, now that I've read roughly half of one book about it: golly those Hasmonaeans sure were a mixed bag, weren't they.

Do any folks have any examples of sensible academic institutional policies regarding the use of AI (in all contexts, by students, faculty, staff, management)? Either actual policies adopted by schools or proposed policies/guidelines. (And no, "fuck AI" is not actually a policy, although I agree.)

History Folks, do any of you know good GIS resources for the Ancient Mediterranean? The Pleiades project is very good for certain things (individual sites, artifacts) but very limited for others (kingdoms, provinces, etc.).

I'll use the current Shakespeare discourse to remind people: Modern English: looks like Shakespeare and everything after Middle English: looks like Chaucer's Canterbury Tales Old English: looks like Beowulf Check out those two works, and prepare for a blown mind.

Quick reminder that a language is defined by what its speakers do with it. If English speakers normalize "y'all" as the 2nd person plural pronoun, or change "ask" to "aks", or anything else, that's not wrong, it just is.

It's been sinking in bit by bit over the last 30+years that all the depictions of helicopter pilots as half-mad weirdos comes from pilots in 'Nam experiencing physical, emotional, and moral brutality.
A photograph of Dwight Schultz as Howling-Mad Murdock, the pilot from the A-Team series. He is wearing anachronistic leather aviator's headgear, a grey leather jacket, and a white scarf. He's looking off past the camera.A screen grab from the movie Clear & Present Danger showing Harrison Ford's character talking to the helicopter pilot, played by Tom Bower. Bower is sitting in a helicopter cockpit wearing a beige jacket and cap, and looking at his wristwatch.

A few road trip photographs from the area of Bay Center and South Bend, WA.
A photograph of a long one-story building, white with a rusty-red roof. It is somewhat dilapidated and wavy from settling, due age and being on pilings over the river. There is a two-lane road in front of it, and the sky is blue with many puffy white clouds.A photograph of a Chinese restaurant named Chen's Restaurant. The sign is white with red and black lettering, and a telephone number is faded and almost illegible. The right end of the sign says "LOUNGE" and has kitschy symbols on it. The building is blue/grey with red trim. A neon OPEN sign hangs in the window. There is a white SUV parked in front. It is sunny, and the sky is high light overcast.

Visited Billy Frank Jr. nature area today.
A photograph of a pond with a uniform layer of green plant life on the surface. Two ducks (mallards?) swim across the frame, leaving trails on the surface. The ducks are brown with bits of white and color, the pond is a light pea green.A photograph of a paper bowl serving as a swallow's nest. Two hatchlings reach up out of the bowl with their mouths open toward an adult swallow, captured in mid-flight just above them. The bowl is white, and perched on brown wood. The hatchlings are dark gray/brown with prominent yellow beaks, the adult is dark blue/grey with a cream colored underside.

When did screwing stuff onto other stuff become A Thing? If you had a nut/bolt, or a screw-top container, when in history would someone say "YOU'RE A WIZARD!", when would they say "That's awesome!", and when would they say "So what?"

TIL that Duane Allman played guitar on Herbie Mann's album, Push Push.
A photo of an album cover. Blocky orange letters read "HERBIE MANN PUSH PUSH", and a (presumably) naked Herbie Mann is shown from the belly button up. He has a normal build, and his skin is a bit glossy. He is holding a long flute in one hand, laid over his shoulder. The background is effectively solid black.

Since it's been on my mind lately, and it's broadly applicable (religion, language, woodworking, etc.), here's a quote from Roy Underhill: "When people ask 'How did they do it back then?', you have to remember that there was a lot of 'they' and a lot of 'back then.' "

Puget Sound farmland, in the Skagit City area.
A black and white infrared photograph of farmland. There is a tilled dirt strip in the foreground in front of a large field of low-lying plants (not sure what crop). Beyond this are several farm buildings and a stand of tall leafy trees. There is a wood telephone pole near the left edge of the frame. The scene is bright but the sky is filled with puffy clouds on the horizon. It has a very slight sepia tone cast.

Every time one of these "What X was popular the year you were born? Mine were etc. etc. etc.", a small part of my brain thinks "Ooh, that's fun, I wonder what mine are." and then the opsec lobe of my brain screams "DON'T DOX YOURSELF, YOU TWIT" In short:
A screen cap from an episode of the cartoon King Of The Hill, showing a man in a green hat, suspenders and a white shirt, holding a concertina, and saying "Life is a series of compromises." He is in a dark office or den, with a bookcase in the background.
