However, if you're pulling heat from concentrated locations (eg the walls or the edges of the existing fire) you can contain and control the fire. Then you're essentially chilling the fuel and making it harder for the fire to spread while letting it cook whatever it's already got. (3/4)

There is a lot of heat generated in secondary combustion in the gasses above the primary fuel; once you're pulling that at a rate you can keep up with the primary combustion, the fire will smoulder rapidly.

Physicist here: it's really a question of heat density along with fuel density and availability of oxygen. If you generally pull heat evenly from the whole roof, it's not going to slow much until you reach a critical point where you quench the fire rapidly. (1/?)

I am a college professor and put in all of my syllabi that i have chronic depression. I talk about it with students as a thing not to be ashamed of, but also not a reason to give up.
