My experience of this (and I did a lot of it after moving into a house full of unwanted stuff, much of which was boxed and new) is that the people of Freecycle are mostly lovely and reasonable, but the people of Facebook Marketplace are crazy people.

@deserterblog.bsky.social these things are South African (who are a people who know how to eat!) and they're amazing, especially the chilli and coriander. Definitely my new favourite crisps.

I think that's more or less exactly what they are and we massively underestimated the usefulness of that

There's also an occasional bug where it tells me I have unread emails when I don't, and if I click on the 'catch up' button it acts impressed. "You're all caught up in 0 seconds"

I feel much the same about my email app which, after a recent update, now congratulates me for reading emails. "You're on a streak. Well done!"

Well I held a symbolic referendum to rename Piddington to Racist-Nimbyton and it was carried by a majority of 100% - so there.

Absolute wild guess, but is it maybe as simple as Polanski speaks a bit of Urdu already?

I mean, if someone put a random number generator in charges of launching the nukes, it wouldn't be the random number generator's fault when it launched the nukes.

But HOW do these weirdos think their chatbot is going to destroy humanity? What is the mechanism?

apart from everything else, why can't any of these people just have a normal name?

I like to sing along loudly (and badly, but I can't do otherwise) whenever I notice someone near me recording on their phone.

You were I guess too young and/or too living in another country to have watched Eurotrash (late night TV show featuring Antoine de Caunes' marvelous accent). It would amuse you I think.

So knowing what to search for in what place and then three clicks. A normal (swipe up and type) search for the same term takes me to a gov.uk site with no record of it.

Personally I love Last Of The Mohicans but it's trash, super fun trash with constant chases and fights, but trash.

No shops in victoria station selling eclipse glasses (not even out of stock, just nothing) and I get the sense we've lost a sort of unseen infrastructure.

I guess the existence of near universal budget options (the options used to be much more dependent on the route before) obviously lowers the average experience. But although I don't like having to pay extra for coffee, I think it's undeniable that the coffee is now orders of magnitude superior.

40 years ago you all had to watch the same movie on a little crt display in the roof with the sound piped (literally) through air hoses you stuck in your ears, and the food was so appalling it was the punchline to hundreds of jokes. What has declined?

Absolutely zero mention in this as to whether the human written stories were any good
theguardian.com
AI-generated stories rated better quality than human-written ones, study finds
Researcher says simpler writing by AI is easier to read and digest, but this does not mean human authors are obsolete

I can recommend Exploration Faucet, compiled from his own writing and then finished by his (other) son. Wonderful for how you slowly realise that this man is absolutely barking and the people who keep abandoning him are, in fact, correct.

Steampunk is a rootless and empty subculture, it has no music nor ethos, it is a meaningless pose that signifies nothing except fondness for a twee aesthetic. In this essay I will...

We are in Whitby the same time as a steampunk festival and it is striking that there are no young steampunks. 90% over 50 at a guess. Thing is I am sure steampunk wasn't a thing when they (and I) were young. They must have all come to steampunk as adults.

I tend to think that when politicians say 'completely' they mean 'visibly' (my mother in law occasionally sleeps rough in the forest of dean for fun). Although all bets are off as to what goes on in Corbyn's head I guess

My impression (so a lot of room to be wrong) is that it decreased quite fast after 97 and increased massively post 2010 - so feels like something governments can do if they want.

A friend of mine once commissioned some market research on young teens, looking at when they gave up childish interests, toys and cartoons, and embraced more adult interests, pop music and sports etc.. The thing that stood out, he said, was that they all still really loved dinosaurs!

My strong sense is that pundits and fans massively overestimate the influence of the manager because managers are so much more replaceable than players

There's an acceptable iambic pentameter lurking in the first line if they'd just edit out the cruft. (I didn't read beyond the first line)

But that was back in the days of proper telly, when it was a thing that just happened one night a week, and you could miss a couple of episodes without it mattering very much

I was wondering the other day (as I took a 'dehydration break') whether the same pattern can be seen in mains water pressure.

Am often put off by just the sheer length of TV shows other people love. E.g. The Wire sounds great, but 60 episodes!
