Surrounded by comics they never have time enough to read. Always tired. Writing nonsense about Robotech on the internet since the late '90s.

Age of Apocalypse is a funny ol' thing. I couldn't tell you what happens in it, I don't think I even read all of it at the time despite buying (almost) all of it, but it looked SO COOL -- it was the last time I was *excited* about the X-Men 'til Morrison's New X-Men brought me back into the fold.

Ooooooh, pretty! Nice to get a lovely fancy edition of this run after which I'd follow both the initial series artist AND writer practically anywhere (with only a few idiosyncratic exceptions).

Now that I'm over this hump, probably gonna finish Crisis for the first time in forever tomorrow or Friday. But with the disc over, I can throw something in the same "OVA about girls and robots and lesbianism and also Masami Obari is here" space that I've never seen before.

Okay, I don't think these three will net me a lot of money, but also pruning these from the art collection won't make me too sad. Like, I might be able to pay everything off with my Minmei from "Force of Arms," but it would also feel like admitting defeat, so that's not happening.

Norm Breyfogle, man. Holy crap, what an absolutely sinister classic Penguin.
A close-up of the Penguin's face, his cigarette holder clenched in his teeth as he grins cruelly, against a backdrop of burning Gotham. He says, "Because I told them to! A man after your own heart, eh? One who knows EXACTLY what he wants--and lets NOTHING in the world keep him FROM it." From Detective Comics 615, story by Grant & Wolfman, script by Alan Grant, pencils by Norm Breyfogle, inks by Steve Mitchell, colors by Adrienne Roy, letters by Todd Klein.

I've reached "Tim Drake, but not Robin yet" in my reading. This exchange, after Batman listed the crimes the Penguin's committed using birds thanks to the technological ingenuity of Harold the mute hunchback (soon to join the Bat-family as mostly a weird background detail of the era) made me laugh.
A pre-Robin Tim Drake in the Batcave asks Batman, "But what about that actress, Sherry West? How does SHE fit into this?" As Batman proceeds to the Batmobile, he says to Tim, "Tim, you're brilliant, but you're only THIRTEEN. In another YEAR or two, you'll understand." From Batman 448, story by Alan Grant and Marv Wolfman, script by Marv Wolfman, pencils by Jim Aparo, inks by Mike DeCarlo.

My Kickstarter reward t-shirt is here! An official Mighty Orbots shirt! Hell yes! (My one editorial note is that I'd have double checked how much a comic actually cost in '84 -- I think it was 65 or 75 cents off the top of my head.)
Black t-shirt with an image of the titular robot from the one-season mid-'80s TMS Saturday morning cartoon MIGHTY ORBOTS on it -- Osamu Dezaki directing the hell out of an action robot cartoon produced for the U.S., for one of the major networks, narrated by the great Gary Owens. Wild stuff.

Well, that escalated quickly. A Batman adventure that opens with him knocking around some petty skate punks goes straight to GRUESOME MUTILATED CORPSE. Mostly sharing due to that perfect little Batman reaction shot.
From Detective Comics 612 by Alan Grant & Norm Breyfogle, Batman pulls up a blonde skate punk he bowled over, telling the kid, "Come on, you! You didn't go down that-- hard?" The punk is freaking out. "OH JEEZ! OH JEEZ! IN TH-TH-THERE, MAN!" Batman looks where the punk is pointing and his eyes widen in horror as he beholds, in the bushes below, a dead man with slashes on his cheek and, more disturbingly, his chest torn open and his rib bones visibly sticking out of his chest cavity.

Always feel a bit sad walking past this building. Used to be a musty used bookstore. It's where I got my copy of Robotech Art 3. Was run by the family of a gal who was in the class ahead of me. Think it closed when they got old, or one of them died? Boarded up, left to rot. Many such cases.

Started the Tom Taylor-written run on Detective Comics earlier tonight and really having a good time with it, even if it did suffer in the first arc from Hush syndrome ("the mysterious new villain is obviously one of the new characters tied to Batman's past") though there was an OK twist at the end.
From Detective Comics 1098 written by Tom Taylor with art by Lee Garbett: Batman is in a truck. He taps his ear while speaking to Oracle. "Highest secrecy level for communication. I'm not alone." "Who's with you?" Oracle asks. Seated next to Batman, the Penguin cracks, "You know, a lot of people in my circle think you just talk to yourself and cover it up by putting a hand to your ear."

It was nagging at me that I didn't have a Plain Ol' He-Man in the Origins collection -- the new head sculpt wasn't doing it for me and I never saw the refresh with the classic look in stores -- and then along came the rerelease preorders timed for the new movie and so ... here he is!
The Origins He-Man action figure, fully armed with his axe and shield, his Power Sword sheathed on his back, standing on the touchpad of my Mac laptop. This is the version with a very good approximation of the original squinty-eyed He-Man head sculpt with his very late '70s haircut.

What the heck are the figures in the sky in the Trump-as-Jesus pic supposed to be? Because at a glance the middle one looks to me like the A.i. almost managed Gunbuster's silhouette, but not quite.

That's a 1991 cover piece, and very much in line with the other cover art you'd see that year on the TurboGrafx platform (the Bonk's Revenge cover was the same year, and LOOK at that dinosaur). Post a non-religious picture you think of as holy
A piece of classic painted Macross/Robotech artwork featuring the lead character's VF-1J Valkyrie in its robotic configuration in space holding up its gun pod and reaching out towards the viewer with its hand, as two of the bipedal enemy walker mecha loom behind it and one Valkyrie in fighter jet mode attacks one of the enemy weapons. This painting has been used on multiple posters, books, and DVD releases for both Robotech and Macross in North America -- and yet, it was also a pain in the butt to find a copy of it using current image searches, especially a copy without any logos ...

And finally the big villain of the piece, Emma Corrin as Cassandra Nova, who comes with one hand stuck into Paradox's head that I guess you need to find a random suited Marvel Legends body to pop it on. Great likeness for Nova, but that head does NOT want to stay on the ball joint for some reason.

Still nice, glad to have it, but very much, "this is the look we wanted in wave 1." Brown costume Logan, as everyone whined when we first saw him, is missing an unmasked head -- this one never wears his mask in the flick! -- but will look very nice with an Avengers: Doomsday Cyclops in the future.
The new Marvel Legends brown-costumed Wolverine from Deadpool & Wolverine, featuring a mask that wasn't in the film I suppose so Hasbro doesn't have to send Hugh Jackman money. While it's not what was in the film, it looks cool at least, and the figure comes with a bare neck piece so you can add your own Jackman visage yourself if you so choose and have it look "right."

Look, nobody who knows me is going to be surprised by the two movies that, off the top of my head, I'm absolutely certain meet this criteria. (Of both of these, I could safely say I've seen them dozens of times.)
One of the original painted poster images for Star Wars, with ripped-looking Luke Skywalker holding his lightsaber aloft, sexy Princess Leia in a sleeveless low-cut white dress holding a blaster, and C-3PO and R2-D2 hanging back behind them as Darth Vader's helmet looms large in the background, and far more X-Wings than actually appear in the film soar towards the Death Star. It's the original US poster image for Transformers: The Movie, featuring most of the new cast of the film front & center -- Springer, Arcee, Ultra Magnus, Cup, and Blurr -- all firing their blasters into the air as planet-mode Unicorn looms above them. In the air, new Decepticons Cyclonus, Scourge, and Galvatron swoop around and fly down towards them. Off to the sides are vehicle-mode Wheelie and Rodimus Prime. Yes, Hot Rod is NOT on the poster, but Rodimus's Space Winnebago mode IS. It's a funny ol' poster like that.

#FourComics that made you fall in love with the medium.
Cover of "Batman: Hunt the Dark Knight," the third installment of what we now call "The Dark Knight Returns." Art by Frank Miller & Lynn Varley. I remember sitting in my dad's lap reading this with him, which is funny since this installment opens with Bruce disguised as a grimy bag lady fighting a topless Nazi chick with her breasts only covered by swastikas.Cover of the second printing of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles issue #4, a famous painting by Michael Dooney which was also the cover of the first TMNT game for the NES. Specifically read this in the second of the old First Publishing full color trade paperbacks, which my mom checked out of the library for me -- I still have all four of those editions on one of my comics bookshelves. I'd been reading the Archie TMNT Adventures comics at that point, but the energy of the original Eastman & Laird comics hit me like a freight train.Cover of Marvel's Transformers issue #61 by Don Perlin. The interiors of this issue were penciled & inked by the mighty Geoff Senior, his first work for the U.S. Transformers comic. Not my observation but one I strongly agree with: whereas the previous few years of the Marvel Transformers comic's pages were filled with pictures, THIS comic was filled with ART. As far as I'm concerned, Senior is still the best to ever do it.Cover of Marvel's Exiles issue #4, art by Mike McKone. I can't remember if this was the first one I picked up off the spinner rack or if it was just the earliest issue I was able to find remaining on a spinner rack *later*, but Winick & McKone's Exiles was THE comic that brought me back into the fold in college after the Onslaught crossover drove me away from American comics early in high school. And despite reading mostly just X-Men through the early-to-mid '90s, no, I didn't quite catch the homage when I picked this up off the stands in the early '00s, even though that's literally what the issue is (the Exiles have to drop into a very slightly different version of the climax of the Dark Phoenix story and make sure Jean Grey dies that day). Anyway, if Exiles hadn't re-hooked me, there wouldn't be about a dozen or so knee-high stacks of comic books I have yet to read or re-read behind me right now.

Hoo boy, that Manga Entertainment "Chinese restaurant font" logo. As for the original U.S. Renditions logo, until the day I die I'll be associating that font with mid-'90s Robotech comics where they used it over the original Robotech font for reasons unknown.
The cover of mid-'90s Robotech licensee Academy Comics's "Robotech #0," an introductory issue to the entire line of Robotech titles they'd be publishing for the next few years. The cover features the Macross cast as illustrated by William Jang , albeit in variations of the uniforms from Macross: Do You Remember Love -- and also, most of them don't feature in the book, at least in that era, as Academy would be publishing the Macross prequel series "Return to Macross" as well as the sequel "Robotech II: The Sentinels" but nothing overlapping the original 36 episodes. And, back to my point -- this does not feature the classic Robotech logo with the notable "E" with no vertical line in it, but rather a "logo" using the same very rounded font as the U.S. Renditions Giant Robo tape in the quoted post, which makes it look like they *couldn't* use the real Robotech logo for some reason. (It was phased out in the previous publisher's comics during their last year with the license and Academy NEVER used it, IIRC.)

Wild timing that Trump did this illegal and evil crap reminding everyone who America has been and making a statement about who we'll be going forward literally the night after CBS posted THIS garbage up to promote their new State media version of their signature evening newscast that starts Monday.
The CBS Evening News account over on the Nazi pedo social media site X posting their phony principles for dim propogandist Bari Weiss and Zionist asshole Tony Dokoupil's version of the broadcast starting on Monday: "4. We love America. And we make no apologies for saying so. Our foundational values of liberty, equality and the rule of law make us the last best hope on Earth. We also believe in Franklin's famous line about America as a republic -- if we can keep it. We aim to do our part every night: One way to think about our show is as a daily conversation about exactly where we are as a country and where we are going."
