Just a weird neurodivergent lefty nerd trying to be a decent human being and make, modify & fix things. What kinda things? More or less anything. Art, models, games, cars, society. You know, things. He/him/his (mostly).

That said, I'm broadly a prison abolitionist these days anyway, and becoming more of an anarchist as I get older and more pissed off too. From my perspective it's not necessarily a bad thing that no government could realistically prevent every avenue of attack from a sufficiently riled populace...

You're not wrong that they're still an issue of course, but there are ways to deal with them and nobody's been standing still waiting for it to happen to them. I remember seeing a hundred and one fun new toys for denying UAVs airspace when I was still going to industry shows at my last job.

RF jammers in the control frequencies, GPS jammers, human patrols with thermal optics. Fibre-optic tethered drones would still be an issue to an extent, but they have very limited range by comparison. They've been dealing with this in prisons for a while, they patrol the grounds first thing.

Show us your tanks! These represent most of the vehicles of the 42nd Crusade (later known as the Arrakeen Jihad). There's a second Land Raider, an old Forge World Venerable Dreadnought and another Rhino hull still waiting for full assembly and paint in my stack of stuff.
Vehicles of the Arrakeen Jihad. back row, there's the Dreadnought "Faust," Rhino "Zensunni," Land Raider Crusader "Emperor Worm," Rhino "Manus Imper" and Dreadnought "Leto I"

Front row there is Predator Annihilator "Crysknife," Razorback "Fedayeen," Razorback "Auliya" and Predator Destructor "Maula"

My take on the Athera, Blade of the Matriarch miniature. A really nice resin miniature for Necromunda. #Necromunda #paintslam26

I like that a lot. Your whole painting style with the models you've done recently feels like it has a consistent artistic theme running through it and I think it's pretty cool :)

Everything else aside, I find that to be an astonishing demonstration of exactly how low the VW Beetle's centre of mass is, presumably thanks to its low-mounted boxer engine...

Feeling broadly similar. Managed to go for a fairly substantial walk today, which I haven't in a while. It was pretty nice actually, I should do it more often. I probably won't, but I should.

5E Codex has precisely one male pronoun in the entire "Making Of A Space Marine" section, and is otherwise entirely gender neutral.
020
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 14h
OK, so the 4th Ed Codex uses he/him/his pronouns for initiates but at no point directly states that they have to be male. A generous reading could imply that gender variations are so small as to render variances irrelevant in the creation of a Space Marine I guess?

Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 14h
Honestly, I looked this up a while ago but you're welcome to go check, there hasn't been gendered language about Space Marine intake in the Codex since either 4th or 5th Edition (my memory isn't perfect). That would have been 2004, maybe 2008ish?

You guys want to hear a short but adorable story that happened right in front of me at the baggage claim in NYC yesterday? I wasn't part of it and there are bits I didn't catch but holy crap, I can't stop thinking about it.

I have met cognitive minimalists and debating impressionists. Both movements were the work of savants; they needed no instruction to carry out their art.🤣

On the other hand of course, it is also true that this kind of Cold War era American abstract art was explictly promoted by the CIA as a form of cultural warfare against the Soviets so, uhh, take that as you will...

Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I think back to what we did with our stories in the RR, and a lot of that would have been incomprehensible to an outsider but still held immense value for us. It's more or less the same thing here, only translated into an external context so that this time you're the one on the outside looking in.

Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
From deliberately offputting walls of noise through to a sort of benign dogwhistle, I think there should be a place for that kind of outsider art. It's often an exploration of cultural signifiers, the shibboleths that distinguish a subculture, and I think exploring those in art is valid.
100
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
There's actually a long tradition of art that's meant to be specifically exclusionary in fact, in music you can look at early 2nd-wave black metal and punk and a running thread through grindcore and post-punk noise. Nails made it explicit with "You Will Never Be One Of Us" but it's an old thought.
100
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
That's a fair opinion to have, but for me I think it's probably OK that some art is meant for specific audiences, and sometimes that means it's not for me.

Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Resprayed in the stock colour but with a subtly deeper layering and a little more flake in the metallics, original upholstery on the seats with refurbished cushions, subtly bolstered. You can't tell it's not factory until you look close, and you have to know what you're looking at.
100
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
No, that's kind of missing the point. It's a Mk3 civic, stripped to bare metal, all the seams welded solid, all the perishable rubber bits replaced with silicon and polyurethane, a subtle A/C install, maybe an engine swap to a B-series motor, stock ride height but with individual coilovers.
100
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
Context is key. A mk3 Civic in factory condition in 1987, no big deal. A mk3 Civic in better-than-factory condition in 2026, *if you know what you're looking at,* /holy shit./ Genuine heartstopper moment. But again, only if you know what you're looking at

Put one way, you have to have an appreciation for the specifics and an attention to detail that doesn't necessarily come naturally to most people. Put another way, you kinda have to be a bit of a pedantic arse and the kind of person who's probably not much fun at parties.
100
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
And I'm not saying one is better than the other (in all cases I like both types) and I don't think "getting it" or not makes anyone a better or worse person but I do think it's sometimes harder to appreciate the value in the more technically specific pieces.

It's the difference between a heavily customised sports car with an Itasha paintjob, fast, flashy, good looking and dangerous, and a Honda Civic that's been painstakingly deconstructed down to the last nut and bolt, every part cleaned and restored and lovingly put back together in factory trim.

Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
It's the difference between an exquisitely carved, ornate sculpture and a simple wooden table that, no matter how closely you look, is absolutely and completely flawless, totally symmetrical, to the point where if you know what to look for it takes your breath away.

Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I'm reminded of bands like Sunn O))) and Earth, who really don't do anything particularly complex or wild musically because their entire creative focus is on tonal interplay, indepth and very specific frequencies of sound interacting in particular ways.
100
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
I mean, that's fair on one level, but it's easy to underestimate how difficult colour theory can be, and how astonishing some of these pieces really are when you see the true tones.
100
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Oh I have an entire ramble on tap about the difference between important art and good art, what we value in an artist etc lol, don't get me started on that! So yeah, I understand what you mean I think, and though I do still disagree I think I can see where you're coming from.

Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Still, as you say, it's nice to be able to have a disagreement about something relatively inconsequential :)
020
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I realise I repeated myself between the two posts there and I have no regrets. I think art that has to be seen in person carries with it as close as it's possible to get a physical manifestation of something ephemeral, a spirit that cannot be captured by human technology, a translation of spirit.
100
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
"just anybody" could not, contrary to the popular assertion, have done that. Colours and finishes with unique and unreproducable properties fascinate me, and are in many ways the final proof of the value of human creativity over mass-market nonsense and bullshit AI kleptography.
210
Captain Hat @captainhat.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I think that not only do I disagree, but I'll go one further; I think there's genuinely something unique and special about art whose value and nature cannot be fully communicated except in person. Rothko's work being unrepairable after the vandalism demonstrates that contrary to popular imagination

(the TL:DR on this is basically that restorative justice is important but has requirements that I don't believe have been met, and which I don't know Jacob is at this point capable of meeting for several reasons- as a result of which I will no longer consider supporting his work).

Aye, fair. On this specific issue (along with a surprisingly large number of other specific issues going back to the election of Francis) I have found myself agreeing completely with the head of the Catholic Church. It's a weird feeling lol.

As an atheist, I only want art with human soul. Give me your human joy, pain, love, anger and all the ineffable stuff that makes us us. Give me masterpieces and shitty amateur attempts. Iterations like symphony variations. Doodles. Made up song in some kinda key. Be human with me.
