It would be one thing if I knew anyone with a young child and a pet who didn't see the pet as a millstone around their neck, but I am yet to find one

I do not want to live in a world where I, a responsible person, send my daughter to a nursery that keeps having to get pest control in because fleas are finding their way in there

People say you get more right wing as you get older but I find it's just that I'm more authoritarian in how the ideology I already have should be enforced. And a kind of scatter gun of single issues line how people with pets should have to use different educational institutions to those without

Had exactly that experience and didn't even make it that far (I think season 11 or 12?) Horrific to think what it'd be like now

Rather than glory supporting, I'm thinking the better one will probably have more family friendliness (although they all will be fine) and also that success isgood for childhood enjoyment

Choosing a (women's) football team to start going to without any particular preconceptions about the four equidistant local teams, do I go: the most successful one playing at the highest level or one of the three that play in the same league and choose semi arbitrarily

The global banter market impact of La Liga is so small that Rodri had to have Valencia being complete shit explained to him while sat on the bench the other week

Genuinely think,e.g., 4 seasons of 30 point deductions is worse than one massive one - relegating city is a novelty side quest, grinding to mid table for will eventually reset city to what they were pre-takeover

The horrifying thing where you think someone's on a video call in public and they do that little half spin back and forth that tells you you're in the background of a promotional Instagram story

My daughter has zeroed in on the fountains in the area of town that is ideal for letting her run around, not understanding that I'm terrified of fountains you can stand in because of the Diana memorial opening mishaps happening at a very formative time in my life

That is to say, I'm not put off by an ai menu outside of certain contexts because there's a lot of greasy spoons, south asian restaurants, etc that do just use it

harry @captainacab.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Sorry late on the ai discourse, but I was looking at some horrendously pixelated photo stand in that a market trader had put up earlier and came to this conclusion: AI menus, etc will eventually become a sign of (class) "authenticity" among the trendies up London for whom shit things are good

The logic where it was initially developed was that it was less tutorable and therefore benefitted smart working class kids (two things can probably be true) (the conversation was about her struggling to tutor her son in it so fair enough)

harry @captainacab.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
Tangential but had a conversation with a colleague the other day where she said she thought the new mode of testing brought in locally (based more on writing) has been to keep Asian kids out

It should not be the case that you can get a pint for three pounds on the same road as a £40 barber
010
harry @captainacab.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Would I go back if I could? In a heartbeat (I actually wouldn't because the barber at the end of my road is excellent and under a tenner, unlike the local legitimate barbers that are somehow all £25+)

harry @captainacab.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
I did used to go to a great Pakistani barbers on the Oxford Road in Reading that was £5. The whole thing was covered in hair and he asked if I wanted a head massage at the end and basically just clipped me round the ears. That was the closest thing to a real illegitimate barbers I have encountered

harry @captainacab.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Turkish barbers have never done this

harry @captainacab.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
The last time I got my haircut by a "legitimate barber" (white man) he just ignored everything I said and gave me his exact haircut

It is testament to our constructive gentle parenting that she has clearly learnt the word no purely from nursery

harry @captainacab.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
The chimerical accent that arises from raising a child in a place neither parent is from is fun. "No" is very of the area we live (somewhere between nor and ner), "yes" is somewhere near rp and she says "up" in that incredibly specific 70-year-old Cypriot cockney accent

Because of our work arrangements she's only in two days, it's not the end of the world - but it's so irritating to be exposed to this battle now

"we've just had a big tidy up and all the toys are away" - then read a book! Use one of the big toys you can't clear away! She barely ever sees screens so she'll just stand there and stare, and there's no consideration that that's probably not a good thing

Big fan of them swooping above you of an evening. Fucking hate them darting about inside like a massive moth. We had it shut in the living room with the windows open and it clawed under the door before we could block it with a towel in seconds.

A bat got in our living room earlier and gave us about an hour and a half of chasing it around trying not to wake the baby

The screen thing tends to be accepted as bad, but the response doesn't tend to go beyond "we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas" The bigger frustration is if working class kids aren't on the pathway by 11/12, there's no point because they'll age out before they see anyone on the NHS

Yeah, in the same way dyslexia has historically been used as a way to give a leg up to middle class kids with poor literacy. Not being able to question it because of lingering woke 1 is maddening

If I were the nation of Spain and I had a delicious soup and a delicious cheese, I would not make it so that by combining the names of the two you got a snail and tripe soup with wet crackers

There’s an underlying assumption a lot of people are making that if a black guy successfully misleads you, it means you have set your racism levels too low.

Great thing about Spain is that you can go to a town you know absolutely nothing of and discover on arrival that it's full of communists

"You've achieved all of this stuff that is essentially impossible to achieve in the timescale you have described? Of course you have, because it's easier to think of you as magical than it is to address systemic inequality"

Miraculous or tragic victims. This is mirrored in well-meaning-liberal discourses on blackness as well.

For obvious reasons, there's far too much focus on race with the Arday thing when I think a lot of the mess stems from him representing the 'perfect' disabled subject. Every possible thing overcome to achieve the Biggest Version of Success in his field - autistic people are only allowed to be

I may be dated - since having to switch to two stops for the baby and then moving north of NC, I haven't been. It was always clean and had a Leon which is obviously better than a lot of the alternatives

Burnham is clearly an attempt to bread and circuses the public into accepting continued redistribution to the super rich. Thing is though I fucking love bread and circuses are a lot of fun, so who's to say if this is bad or not

Amazing that BBC 6 now has a spinoff that doesn't allow women on and, in listening to twenty minutes of the morning show, I have discovered that they don't even play songs by women

Very pleased for/with Djed Spence with this world cup, but disappointed that he will get passed over in the public consciousness.
