The result of a program where we weren't allowed to Do that is this feeling of isolation I was left with. I was left feeling like no one understood my work, and I wasn't allowed to take other people's work apart either, so I didn't understand Theirs as deeply as i should've.

1 thing about my poetry program last year that i really hated was that no one was Real. everyone was so super nice but no one felt safe to say what they really felt. never once did i feel like I was resonating, especially during feedback sessions. It was all Fake, or they didn't get it at all.

A String of Pearls — Poem from March of this year, about my bitterness at feeling devalued/misunderstood.

A String of Pearls

Drapery over the covemouth, with
brine’s sharp glisten, like gristle in eye
on the dewy weed. Kelp-blanched foam rushes
the whorled stone, funneled into muteness
—My ribbed heart sequesters a pearl

and the nacre sequesters a bitter bead,
one of a hundred-billion, pried from me by callous
shucker. My ears hear the song discordant, like I am
missing something essential—mermaid borne with lungs, she
beaches herself to sing, she shines with nacreous tears.

Aphrodite’s birthwaters have touched everywhere with their colors—
like prismatic oil, choking the surface. Am I cruel to hate this?
Sardines and their self-sacrifice. I swallow fishoil like it's a whole thing.
I survive. Sustain. Pearls are now near-worthless economically, so why bother?

At Tip Top Vintage, with the tiger rugs on the corner, I found
a bracelet of ochre pearls for $4. I found yellow, alone, had stained everything
when I wasn’t paying attention. What am I, if I’m not a liar?
The thing at the core, underneath the calcium, the shame
that inspires my farce—what if it was never there?

You wear my string of pearls
and can’t understand them—Don’t bother to.
They're stones.

The first stanza is very Opaque in meaning compared to the rest of this piece—which is intentional. Its all very pretty and glazes off the imagination without much challenge. But I intended to say something very specific in the opening I wanted it to only be understood through close interpretation.

ended my poetry program without a manuscript that I felt was airtight. A little sad to have to sit on that work for a while before I can publish it, but thats fine. I got plenty of milage out of releasing the poems in individual zines or prints or such-likes.
