It's another #MysteryMonday. These marks are on Macclesfield Bridge beside Regent’s Park. They were worn into its iron columns by tow ropes. But why are some of the marks on the side where tow ropes would no longer run? Add your answer in the comments 🔎 Photos: Charlie Forman

🚧 The lift from our mezzanine to the first floor is currently out of order. We anticipate normal service from Tuesday, 22 September. The lift from our ground floor to the mezzanine continues to work, and there is no impact on access to our wharf for boat trips.

Excited to share that we've acquired the Northwich 🎉 Built in 1898 in Birmingham for Fellows Morton & Clayton, she is one of the oldest boats in the canal system. She worked the first 60 years of her life, then spent the next 60 in the National Waterways Museum collection...

Our tug, Bantam IV, built in 1949-1950, is looking shiny and new after a repaint. Our thanks to specialist painter Will for his work. Maintaining our collection is vitally important to the museum, and when the collection item floats, it's always an interesting piece of work!

That was Ice Weekend. The ice wells are closed to visitors again now, for another year.  Most museums were built to be museums. Ours was built to be a giant Victorian refrigerator. Beneath the ground floor sit two brick ice wells that once held 700 tons of ice each. (1/2)

Agnes Marshall taught Victorian London to make ice cream. She sold more than 24,000 copies of her Book of Ices, patented a machine that froze a batch of ice cream in three minutes, and invented edible cones a decade before America claimed the idea. (1/2)

In 1857, Carlo Gatti shipped his first 400-tonne load of Norwegian ice to London and stored it in wells beneath what is now our museum. One later delivery, the SS Moringen, landed 600 tons at once. (1/2)

We're at the Brentford Canal Festival today ☀️ From 1805, Brentford was where the inland canal network met the Thames, cutting around 60 miles off the Birmingham to London route. West Indies lime juice was warehoused here before heading to Rose's in Hertfordshire, until 1981. (1/2)

It's another #MysteryMonday. In June 1811, 2,000 guests were drawn to a house on Pall Mall. Supper at 3am. The host's table stretched 200 feet through a Gothic conservatory. Running down the centre of that table was a miniature canal. 🧵1/2

It's #MusicHallVarietyDay 🎭 Carlo Gatti is known as London's Ice King — but the ice trade was only half the story. After his café was demolished in 1862 to make way for Charing Cross Station, he used the £7,750 compensation to build an entertainment empire. (1/2)

St Pancras, whose feast day is today, is one of three Catholic saints known as the 'Ice Saints', associated with a last cold snap in mid-May. Our museum building in King's Cross was built for the Victorian ice trade, with the only publicly accessible ice wells in the UK... (1/2)
