Playing a healer or support role with a controller might be more difficult as you will need to hold the left bumper then cycle through the party or raid frame to target your friend or party member who needs help. Or mash the left bumper the cycle through all nearby friendly targets to find them. 🫂

You can also use the bumpers to target friendly and unfriendly targets alike and then mark them. Pressing down on the right control stick lets you ping the area highlighted by the reticle and holding it down opens the ping menu. So playing with a controller does make it viable to lead dungeons! 💀

First and foremost the targeting is very forgiving and generous. That is to say by pointing the "reticle" in the general direction of an enemy then casting a spell will then tag it as your current target immediately even without using the right bumper. This is very useful if you're grinding! ⚙️

Rogues and Warriors especially will LOVE using a gamepad as toggling action bars quickly allow you to set up easy to manage and execute combinations! The servers are going down for now, but later tonight I will continue testing with a caster while using the gamepad and report back. Stay tuned! 🎮

Overall the control scheme is better than expected. Offensive roles such as melee and ranged damage classes or specializations will delight playing with a controller while support roles such as healers may struggle juggling the additional shortcuts to cycle through menus, frames, and targets. 🎮

You cycle between three to four "action bars" that have buttons assigned to the direction pad and the X, Y, A, and B buttons. You select which bar is active by holding either trigger, none, or both. You interact with the world mostly using X which you will see hover over characters or objects. 🎮

Using a gamepad versus a keyboard and mouse took a little while to get used to but I started to get a handle on things as quickly as reaching level two. If World of Warcraft ever comes to console, the controls will feel natural for players and I didn't feel disadvantaged versus using a keyboard. 🎮

While the beta currently does not provide a tutorial for the basic controls scheme like you would find in the retail version of the game, Forever hits the ground running. Shortcuts and hotkeys are displayed persistently in the upper lefthand corner at all times and every button has a function! 🎮

Today I am playing the World of Warcraft Forever beta test using an XBOX controller for testing. I managed to switch to control scheme to gamepad support before the beta began in earnest so here are the thoughts from someone who has been playing since 2005! 🎮 #worldofwarcraft #wowforever #wowbeta
