Can the commons help our rivers to thrive again? With no help from the private or public sector, turning our rivers into commons could be a ray of hope in a dark time. Read the article here: www.campaignforcommons.org/blog/our-common-rivers #commons #community #saveyourriver #ukrivers

The systems that traumatise us and the land turn us into perpetrators of trauma It’s a cycle that has to stop Community = people + land. That’s why the commons are radical, and why we need them so much now Sign up to our newsletter to find out more tinyurl.com/CFCommons

Dream of rewilding, but it’s out of reach? There’s a way we could all access land, to rewild, to be a guardian for nature and future generations. Reform the commons Sign up to our newsletter to find out more tinyurl.com/CFCommons

1/4 Can’t afford land, but want to grow food, and a community? Many of us dream of a patch of land to grow food for ourselves and for our community. But for most of us, it’s a pipe dream. At a time when it’s almost impossible to even buy somewhere to live, stretching for land is out of reach

Thanks @wildjustice.bsky.social for your work on this. It’s essential that the government don’t get away with weakening environmental protections

Today marks the 60th anniversary of the 1965 Commons Registration Act - a piece of legislation which has unwittingly created devastating consequences for both humans and nature. It’s time for change

I grew up with a particular love for dystopian films - the running man, blade runner, total recall, akira. It’s scary to be living it for real. This can’t go unchallenged - we, and our children will pay for this

We have an ancient system of land rights that still governs land in the country larger than Greater London and Essex combined. It’s something very special, but more than that, it has the potential to help us face some of our biggest crises #commons #community #systemschange #SSSIs #standingstones

I agree with this whole heartedly - building a movement, connecting all the groups together, putting aside differences - there are so many of us out there, and we can often feel alone. But we’re not. We’re all fighting the same system, whether it’s nature, trans, Gaza, industrial farming or VAWG ✊🏽

How can we still be doing this? Pesticide and herbicide use needs to end, we’re in the middle of the collapse of insect life, without which we’re… screwed, to put it mildly www.theguardian.com/environment/...
theguardian.com
Half of UK councils still use pesticides in public places, research finds
Pesticide-free movement has grown, but many local authorities still spray weedkiller linked to wildlife declines and cancer

I hope that this historic win quickly leads to cases. But will governments obey the courts? Or will decisions be reviewed, researched and reported into nothing?

Common land and common rights need to be demystified, so we can understand what is happening with an area bigger than Greater London & Essex combined. Our current common rights have everything to do with feudal peasantry and nothing to do with the world we find ourselves in today

Plastics have infected our water and our land - our commons. Plastics pollution has to stop, and this is a systemic issue, not just a ‘personal choice’

Campaign For Commons @campaignforcommons.bsky.social · 29/07/2025
It shows how ridiculous our land ownership and access system is. We firmly believe that all rivers, lakes and seas should be commons, with rights and responsibilities held for them by the people - not private landowners or corporations

🧵1/7 Who owns common land? Is it the king? Local councils? No one? It can seem really opaque to understand ownership and rights on common land But common land can be owned by anyone. Public or private, business or organisation. It’s the rights over the land that make it common, not ownership

Paid a visit to Wistman’s Wood again to see how it’s doing. Really pleased to see how many cactus guards are now installed around regenerated oak saplings to protect them from grazing - great work by the Duchy, their tenant farmer & NE. No livestock in the newtake either - apart from a stray sheep!

1/6 So what is common land? There are urban commons as open green spaces, places to walk our dogs, or have a picnic. then there are upland commons, usually synonymous with sheep. There are also lowland commons, sometimes heathland or wooded areas.

1/4 Have you ever walked across a common and thought, what does common actually mean? Is this for me? Many of us live near commons, walk our dogs there, play with our families, or go hiking. They are green spaces we can all access - but are the commons delivering, for people, or for nature?

Reform mayor Andrea Jenkyns tells Times Radio that she doesn’t believe climate change exists, and that it’s just a “racket” for some people to make money. If Reform win the next election, the UK could become a very different place quite quickly.
ait Borsay: "Do you think climate change exists?"
Andrea: "I've said for a long time, we need to ditch net zero and actually focus on economic growth. A million percent."
Kait: "But then how do you tackle climate change? And do you believe that climate change exists?"
Andrea: "Do I believe that climate change exists? No."
Kait: "Okay. So you are not a believer in climate, you know, despite rising global temperatures, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, despite all of that evidence?"
Andrea: "It depends. It depends what evidence you look at.... I think it's a way to actually make money."
Kait: "Okay. But you don't believe climate change exists. And so that's why there is no need for net zero, in your opinion."
Andrea: "Absolutely. And I think it's harming industry. I think it's a money making racket where certain businesses and individuals are making money out of it."
