The little inscriptions from Tell Umm el Marra are causing a bit of a stir (a reading of one has just been suggested). I wish there were more finds contemporary with these... A big problem with "Early Alphabetic" is demonstrating it's a single tradition. www.scientificamerican.com/article/worl...
