Why does a wound feel like winter? 🧵 Cut a leaf and the wound turns cold, and it turns out the plant is reading that chill as an instruction. botany.fyi/winterwound
A thermal image of a leaf. Two cuts on the plant show up as striking cold purple against the warm orange of the leaf.

The postponed soapbox finally happened on Sunday and was worth the wait. I got to talk about Crispr in crop breeding, answered amazing questions and got to hear all the other inspiring and fantastic talks! 💚 @berlin-soapbox.bsky.social

This sunday I’ll be on a soapbox 📦 in record Berlin heat, talking about crop breeding! 🌾🧪 Spoiler: crops hate this weather too 🌡️ & we are going to dive into what science can do about that! Come join us @berlin-soapbox.bsky.social. Free & with a whole lineup of brilliant talks! 📍Holzmarkt 25 3-7pm
Program for Soapbox Science Berlin on a yellow background, listing four groups of talks:
Group 1 (15:00–16:00): Nadezhda Evtushenko, Max Delbrück Center 'Can the Spinal Cord Sense Itself - and Why Would It?'; América Torres-Boy, Fritz-Haber-Institut 'Decoding Molecular Messages with Light!'; Yalei Zang, Charité 'The Matrix Inside You: Your Body's Secret Superpower.'
Group 2 (16:00–17:00): Anushka Pahuja, Freie Universität Berlin & Zuse Institute 'Outsmarting the Painkiller Killers: Engineering Endomorphins That Survive'; Dr. Amalie 'Amy' Vang Høst, Bielefeld University 'Tiny Enzymes, Big Problems: Building Plastics with Biology'; Camilla Hörsch, Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) 'Mutation, Method, and Myth: A Conversation About Crop Breeding.'
Group 3 (17:00–18:00): Sheetal Samal, University of Cologne 'Sea to Sand: Shells that Help Us Understand'; Dr. BV Aditi Prasad, Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology 'Cornered: How Small Populations Outlast the Extinction Odds'; Alea Joachim, University of Potsdam 'Decoding Volcanoes: From Eruptions in Iceland to the Signals That Hold Their Secrets.'
Group 4 (18:00–19:00): PhD Carolina Doran & PhD Franziska Stressmann, European Citizen Science Association 'Everybody Can Be a Researcher, Including You. Let's Discover the Citizen Scientist in You!'; Katarina Ninkovic, Max Planck Institute for Molecular Genetics 'Genes That Jump: How Transposons Define a Species'; Anna-Lisa Poser, Fraunhofer Institute of Applied Polymer Research 'The Wonderfully Versatile World of Shape-Memory Polymer Foams.'Promotional flyer for Soapbox Science Berlin on a bright green background. Soapbox Science was founded in 2011 in London by scientists Nathalie Pettorelli and Seirian Sumner, inspired by Speakers' Corner in Hyde Park. The event invites female, non-binary and underrepresented scientists (this includes cis and trans women, queer and non-binary persons, and Black, Indigenous and People of Colour) to stand on a soapbox and present their research to the public, free of charge and open to anyone.

🌸 FLOWERING NEWSLETTER REVIEW 🌸 González-Suárez et al. review how temperature regulates reproductive development in seasonal contexts, focusing on molecular factors controlling meristem transition from vegetative growth to the end of flowering 🌼 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/jxb/... #PlantScience 🧪
Fig. 4.Changes in meristem activity and identity across the seasons. Circular diagram illustrating the multiple developmental transitions that occur in aerial meristems of Arabidopsis during the year. The temperature profile and timing of events are based on a field trial conducted in Norwich, UK (Lu et al., 2022). The apical vegetative meristem (VM) acquires reproductive identity during late autumn and early winter, after which it initiates floral primordia and later becomes dormant. In spring, flowering-promotive conditions trigger bolting, and the VM from the primary inflorescence (PI), now fully transitioned into an inflorescence meristem (IM), resumes reproductive development in the I2 zone of the inflorescence. Although delayed in their floral transition, axillary meristems (AMs) follow a similar developmental fate in the I1 zone. Finally, IMs undergo proliferative arrest in summer.
